I think he has a problem with his fitness levels. Doesn’t play for a full 90 minutes often. I wonder if he’s asthmatic or a smoker when he was young. I don’t think anyone questions his ability, I think it’s a question if he can adjust to the intensity of a pressing game Arteta has in mind.

He's gotten injuries very often so I think they're managing him with that in mind. He's had a lot of injuries in the last few years, since becoming a scholar he's had at least one injury that's taken a chunk off of his playing time.

I see. I hope he gets over those injuries man. I really do. It’s so heartbreaking to watch a talented footballer get betrayed by their own body.

I love his drive towards the opposition, makes me think of Rosicky.
I like how Rosicky/Cazorla and now ESR always made themselves available in unmarked space, creating passing options for their teammates to support the attack. Pass the ball, make themselves available, pass the ball, make themselves available......These are attacking midfielders who are actively involved in play.

Unlike Özil, who is almost invisible in the building up phase. He let his teammate to create possession, movement and space for him to just make that assisting pass in the final third, without contributing much in the build up.

I also like Rosicky/Cazorla and ESR because they are smart players who would think about when our team should go forward and when we should slow down play.

Unlike Ramsey who always gets forward (regardless of the situation) and exclude himself in the build up after passing the ball, without thinking if the pass receiver need any support, or whether the opponent has gaps for him to exploit, or if he is running to a compact and marked area that we may better build up slowly.

I hope we would have more types of these smart players in the team, really missed the beautiful intelligent passing play of Rosicky, Hleb, Fabregas, Van Persie (and later Nasri).

Is it terrible that i'm not on the ESR train yet? Like I see positives signs in what he's doing on the pitch and i'm not writing him off obviously, but I can't say I've seen him do anything that made me think we have a potential star here. Glad to be proved wrong though.

He still needs to work on his final third play. Rarely seems to spot a killer ball.

Cowley has often played him for 60 minutes or so. Pretty sure they are aware of his injury record.

It's a pity he wasn't loaned out to Town in august. We wouldn't be risking relegation now. Technically, he is just on another level than the rest of the squad.

What is the play style of ESR for those of you who watch him. If you have to compare him to current footballer, who may that be?

He is unique. There isn't a footballer you can compare him to that plays today.

He likes to play between the lines, but he is as direct as a winger but he plays centrally. That's what sets him apart. He simply runs with the ball at every single opportunity. No player does that centrally anymore, out of fear of losing the ball and being transitioned on.

When you consider he is 6 ft tall and is yet to properly fill out, once he gets his man strength he will ride challenges.

The only player who I can think of who played the same way at his age is Kaka.

Nah you're right.

Its just his technical base, athleticism and unique blend of agility and height that make him special.

There's nothing he's exceptional at right now but the technique he has means he could easily add stuff like shooting and long passing to his game. It's like when good players suddenly become good at free kicks, some guys are just good with the ball in all ways if that makes sense?

He has demonstrated good long-range passing ability had Huddersfield tbf, some can be seen in youtube highlights and the few games I've managed to watch through stream he spreads the ball very well.

Shooting ability is also something he is specialists in at u23 and u18 level but hasn't transformed yet to senior level. There is goal from Smith-Rowe at u23 that is even more beautiful than Jack Wilshere famous u18 goal against West Ham.

Through balls and shooting is a bit hard to showcase at Huddersfield but maybe he will have an easier time here now that Arteta is asking our players to do more through balls!

Very good talent, I have very high hopes that he can make it with us!

Maybe comaprable to de Brunye? Very good passer, taking the ball forward. I don't no about his shooting skills. I guess he's more of a dribbler than de Bruyne.
