His job is to get the ball into the final third where our 'creative' players should be. He literally did that with 13 passes into the final third and 2 into the penalty area. He is deep lying midfielder/part time defensive midfielder, his job isn't meant to be the one playing the final ball ffs.
Santi was a deep lying playmaker so was Xavi and Pirlo

How would everyone compare Arteta's time as our deep playmaker, to Granit's?
Arteta was stat padding in that position by always picking the safe passes, either backwards or sideways. It was also a position he wasn't supposed to be in and got bullied easily by more physically dominant midfielders, so he made the most out of a rotten deal.

Xhaka was spraying diagonals early in the first two seasons here, but eventually started to do the same as Arteta.
Overall, I feel like Xhaka, who can be a real knucklehead at times, provides a bit more in that position.

15/16: Arsenal finish 2nd

25th May 2016, Arsenal sign Xhaka

16/17: Arsenal finish 5th, first time finishing outside the top 4 under Wenger.

17/18: Arsenal finish 6th

18/19: Arsenal finish 5th

19/20: Arsenal sit 9th with 2 games to go

Interesting.

Xhaka only has a long pass over Arteta. He is poorer than Mikel in almost every other aspect. Even for his height and size, Xhaka gets physically outmatched by the biggest players. Arteta had more progressive passes

TBF, Arteta did have his own limitations but he was more penetrative with his passes.

Not constantly passing to the CB and sideways.

He was great, only lacked pace which caused all sort of problems because we had Mertesacker on one side and we played a high line. One quick ball down our right flank when Sagna pushed up and we couldn't cope. Koscielny nearly always had to cover but he had to mind his own side as well. If we had signed Cahill instead of Mertesacker I think we would've only seen the best of him and he would be very highly regarded, not just by Arsenal fans.

That's exactly what he was doing. He would assist or initiate an attack once in a blue moon. He was mostly holding on to possession by giving the ball to someone who wasn't in danger of getting dispossessed.

Without Arteta there was no possibility of us finishing in the top 4 in 2012. While in 12/13 he was statistically the best central midfielder in the country.
