What is a loan with option to buy really?

It's no different to a loan. Other than, for the buying club you've agreed a price up front.

But functionally, what stops the club loaning a player then at the end saying to Arsenal we don't have €25m as per our option, we will give you €15m and at this point the player is now settled in his new club.

In other words, loaning mature talent out to rival clubs without an obligation to buy is absolute mugs work. Your also allowing them to run their contract down.

It should be reserved for players who have no resale value and we would otherwise prefer to terminate their contract.

In Torreira's case, it'd be awful business to loan him out. He can sit on the bench and force his way into the team.

F*** Atletico btw these pricks are making a fortune out of us by taking Torreira on a loan and not selling Partey unless his RC is activated. They’re really playing the hard ball

If he does well Atletico will definitely buy him.

This is probably a transferred structured as such to help them out. The Morata deal is an example.

The balls in their court. Partey is their best midfielder, they rightfully want his RC paid in full, he also isn,'t pushing for a move.

Torreira is surplus to requirements here and wants to leave. They know we will end up accepting a loan.

They're doing what any club would do.

We can't go into af new season with Xhaka, Ceballos and Elneny as the only midfield options. Arteta knows that. Must mean we're confident of getting someone in. Probably Aouar.
