4-5-1

Any team that plays 451 with success has

1. a target man

2. wide players who can CROSS. Surely with 5 its win it get it wide then MF players ATTACK from the centre, not continue to play in conjested areas?

3. A solid defence that can actually pass and bring the ball out of defence to RETAIN possession.

Probably a 4 and 5 *cant be ars*d) but tactically Wenger just has NO clue honestly I have seen more inventive changes during a game from my sons under 16 league managers!
it kills me that we actually try to play 4-5-1 through the centre.

no, we should have sticked to 4-4-2 and signed a central midfielder who can actually pass the ball and isn't afraid to get stuck in. instead, wenger has decided to change things around completely. 4-5-1 is just nonsense. we don't have wingers. we don't have quality defensive midfielder. we don't have a decent 'lone striker'.

Would the NEW signing still play alongside Cesc? A move to 4-5-1 was to compensate for cesc (lack of physical presence) in the middle. As long as Cesc is in your FIRST team, a 4-4-2 will make us lightweight in the middle. A combinationof Diaby/Gilberto..can hold the middle but then we lose on the creativity/distribution of Cesc.
Please, Gilberto can't even hold his **** to take a piss.

i'd argue the problem isn't so much the midfield needing to be held, but rather we lack a go to man that can hold up the ball adequately, while we have reyes and hleb, the closes we get to a real goto man able to hold up the ball, take his time and allow people to get into the best positions is Cesc, we just need someone stronger, who people can't rob the ball off, Cesc/Hleb/Reyes-esque

Last season saw Arsenal lose just five matches; this season has seen The Gunners slip to seven defeats with 16 games still to play.

With the loss of Patrick Vieira in midfield, Arsenal have not only lost a quality player but the experience that goes with it.

Whilst they have several young and exciting players coming through such as Francesc Fabregas, Mathieu Flamini, Philippe Senderos and new prospect Theo Walcott, Arsène Wenger's confidence in defence seems at an all-time low.

To make up for the loss of a defensive midfield player and someone to hold up the ball, Wenger has opted to play a 4-5-1 formation to protect the back four and attempt to dominate the midfield as they have done so often in the past.

This formation has not suited Thierry Henry who often drops back to pick up the ball. When Wenger has opted for two up top, Henry has often prospered, with The Gunners firing home 33 goals in the 16 games.

Arsenal have scored just one goal with the 4-5-1 formation and average about two goals per game fewer than when they play 4-4-2.

Defensively Arsenal are no stronger when opting for the 4-5-1 formation, conceding on average more goals and allowing the opposition more shots per game.

4-4-2 Starting Formation............4-5-1
Attacking
16 Games...........................6
33 Goals............................1
2.06 Goals per game.............0.17
12.1 Shots per game.............9.0
6.1 Shots on per game.........3.5
Defending
11 Goals conceded..............5
0.69 Goals conceded per game0.83
7.3 Shots allowed per game 8.8
2.8 Shots on allowed per game2.8

One goal in 6 games says it all really.. I ****ing hate the stupid 4-5-1. Wenger is a hypocrite for using it.

not quite a scientific analysis, simply because we played 451 mostly for away game. and you know how bad our away game was no matter in 451 or 442.

How can you be so sure of that? We haven't tried the damn 442 formation away from home! No wonder we have only scored once in 6 games.

We concede more, score less, and lose more. Thats what sums us up when using the 451 formation.

We did try 4-4-2 earlier this season away from home and it was NOT working either.

Adebayor is our only striker who will fit the 4-5-1 formation, he's a proper ****ing target man.
