League is very weak
With the amount of money we've spent since Arteta came in (800m) challenging for the title is a bare minimum expectation. And he's bottled twice in a row probably 3 times including this season with City having major injuries in the last 2 seasons. Nothing much to shout about. Wenger was able to be competitive without spending such extravagant amount of money. Teta already spent close to what Wenger did in his over 20 years at the club in 5 years. And what've we got to show in the last 5 years? One FA Cup and that was with the squad Emery left behind. We've won absolutely nothing since he's dismantled that squad. 1 fcking cup in 5 years. Even Ten Hag had a better return. And now we're worse off this season compared to the last. What phase are we supposed to be in now?

We didn't have very good luck with injuries.
In season 2022/23 we lost both Saliba and Tomiyasu in March and then collapsed.
It was better last season, but we were without Partey and Timber basically the whole season.

You must be joking about Conte.
He would have left scorched earth behind him.
We were largely injury free last season while City had KDB and Haaland out for large periods of the season and still bottled the title so what's your excuse? And they are now five points above us with even worse injury problems and it's not even December yet. Same goes for Liverpool this season with injuries and Slot hardly spent any money in the window and they are 7 points above us what's your excuse?

Conte's a joke? Nah Arteta's a joke compared to him. He's a multiple times league winner with different clubs compared to a chequebook fraud who's won one ****ing 1 FA Cup with a squad that's not his in 5 years after spending nearly a billion. Even at a joke club like Sp**s he did relatively well compared to we were under Arteta. They finished above us qualifying for the champions league finishing 4th in his first season while we finished 5th under Arteta before Arteta went cheque book mode. When he left Sp**s were still in 4th place and in champions league contention. And he's managing a joke club like Spuds with a joke miser owner like Levy compared to Arteta who's had a vastly superior squad and limitless amount of money to spend with the owner fully behind him. There is no comparison between managing the two clubs. It's like heaven and earth and like playing a game in easy mode and hard mode. Conte overperformed while Arteta's performance is underwhelming. There is no comparison at all when it comes to the quality of the two. I can't believe you're rating a fraud like Arteta above a proven winner like Conte.

And look at him already at the top of the table with Napoli in his first season and we can't even beat a team that is below Napoli ffs. And why would he go scorched earth mode if he was afforded the time and money afforded to Arteta now? If he's had the squad and money afforded to Arteta we would've won the league multiple times already.

DoF's role should shadow over the manager. But with Teta's increasing influence that won't happen and it worries me because we won't get anyone decent or half reliable. Guess more of these stupid Goalkeeper and Defender signings.

If I suggest Bruno Guemeres and Paqueta and the club ends up signing the midfielders they signed instead- yeah I would probably bounce too.
A football director’s job is to build the squad. Together with, or with input from the manager, of course.

I think it’s fairly obvious that Edu didn’t have that mandate and Arteta is the one who have built this squad. The partnership thing is not a lie, but how did it look in the end? They can have had a 50/50 say in transfers but in the end, if one guy always gets his way then it’s not really a partnership, is it?

That said, Edu likely only has himself to blame as signings we can definitely put his name on, like Marquinhos etc, really failed to impress.

The one I wonder most about is Vieira. Who was the driving force behind him..? I suspect Edu.

Fabio was 100% Edu lol

Arteta wasn't even in the vid when Edu have him the tour of Colney.
Yeah well then it’s clearly easy to see why we wouldn’t go for his recommendations. His track record with transfers looks suspect at best imo.

But I don’t think Arteta should get that kind of mandate either. Even if you attribute all successful transfers to him (which is not true) it still shows a lack of squad building from a long term, strategic perspective.

Half a year of BBQ-ing for Edu on the horizon, you have earned it sir 💪

I'm sure there is a high-brow quote that relates comedy and the truth.
Wasn't there the burgeoning narrative that Arteta made every possible decision for everybody, nobody else had any other say in anything and everyone exists to do his bidding? First team coaching staff having so much influence over recruitment seems like the other polar end of the spectrum...

I'd say, and as if often the case, both extremes pose problems.

Yep, there has to be some balance. First team coaching input I'm sure is invaluable, these guys have a more direct pulse than any body else. But as a DoF I would 100% be asking what the **** is going on if I can't do my job effectively because a coach disagrees with me. The roles are different because they serve different functions...

It also runs absolutely contrary to the dominant narrative I've been reading on here, so a bit interesting and curious.
