Alex Manninger Passes Away Aged 48

Just heard on the radio, that former Arsenal goalkeeper, Alex Manninger, has Passed Away.
I thought he was a Brilliant back up goalkeeper. A shame he never had more game time. (RIP).

I was only 11 when we won the title in 97/98 but I always remember thinking he was one of the greatest keepers I'd ever seen when he deputised for Seaman. I know it was only a few games but I'm sure he had some amazing run of form as soon as he stepped up.

Damn RIP Manninger. He was a solid back up for us. Bit of a cult figure for me, was around for my favourite days as an Arsenal fan.

Really sad news. I remember him being part of the team that went to Old Trafford and won with that Overmars goal. A place we always struggled to get a result and he made a few good saves that game. He was just a fresh faced youngster at the time

Unless you're of a certain age you might not realise what an important part he played in our history. Yes, he was only a back-up keeper who played 60 or so games for us over five seasons but his interventions in Wenger's first full season when we won the double cannot be overestimated. When the great David Seaman went off injured and we knew he was going to be out for 2/3 months it felt like game over, we were like 12 points behind with a game in hand anyway. But he came in, an unknown 20 year old kid, stood up and made a string of saves and kept six clean sheets in a row - including the crucial win at Manu - and saved a penalty in the FA Cup quarter final shootout.

Without Alex, or if he'd buckled under the pressure, there may not have been a Wenger double or Wenger any trophy in 1998 and who knows how things would have carried on from there.

He wasn't a great keeper but he was a good option on the bench and he definitely had that glorious moment in the sun in 1998. Rest easy, Gooner.
