The article by the athletic essentially alluded to as much. His methods weren’t very popular with some of the high ranking individuals in the other organizations. It is what it is, he could pull off a mastertroke in the winter and he looks like a genius for not spending money on the rest of the trash out there
I called this at the start of the summer with Berta. As someone who does negotiating as a career, often negotiating with people who earn like half a million a year at times (big egos, top of their field) I was concerned that his approach will rub people the wrong way. You’re dealing with egos, you’re dealing with difficult agents, stubborn presidents, and players who want to feel wanted. I had a theory Berta pissed off the Sporting president last summer and had things been done differently, we wouldn’t have gotten a fat Gyokeres without a pre season.
Then you look at Monga and how much we dithered there. The warning signs were there.
There’s theories that really Rogers was there for the taking and could have been secured earlier. But again we dithered around, let the Andersen fee increase their demands, don’t raise the offer, pissed off the club, probably made the player feel unwanted to the point that when Chelsea came in it sounded like he was totally all in for them and wasn’t exactly gonna wait around for us.
Arsenal vision podcast the other day reminded listeners that they had an A. Madrid specialist on when we first acquired Berta and he mentioned that the president (or someone similar) did most of the negotiations there and it wasn’t the main focus of Berta. That doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.
