The defence and Rice won us the league.

We are if Saka is fit, imo.

Haven't retained the league in forever (1930s?), but everyone's defense is kind of iffy as far as the top teams go.

Attack will be the difference, which is a pickle for us in and of itself.

That’s another variable (as well as Ode and Kai’s fitness).

There’s a reason we haven’t retained a title in almost 100 years.

We will have to be rock solid defensively again as our attackers are not at the level of our rivals. Think that will be almost impossible to achieve without Saliba and potentially Timber.

Both are a big miss but Saliba is the worst for me, he really seems to stabilize Gabriel in a way where they compliment each other perfectly but there clearly is a dropoff from Gabriel when they don't play together.

I think the pursuit of Vini was probably equally about commercial value and sporting value. Barcola doesn't bring the commercial boom that Vini would have so the club are less willing to push the boat out for a player who might develop into a similar level of producer but who doesn't bring the added revenue and status. It's understandable but also a little disappointing because you do sometimes just have to push the boat out like with Rice.

It's understandable, but we're partially culpable of being where we are.

Vini financials makes every other deal not seem worth it, and I agree with the club on that. 150m for a floor raiser (who could be a ceiling guy) is steep, but the alternative is getting a guy like Diomande or Godts and we seem even less inclined to do that.

They play totally different positions. It's Zubi or MLS if one is going.

Not sure what you are trying to say with this gif tbh
Nah.

MLS Bruno Rice is a better trio than any combination involving Ode

Could we just get Munoz from Palace?

If it’s like 20-25m that Everton and others are seeking to get him at then surely that would be a smart pick up by us. Ben White or Timber starting alongside Gabriel with Mosquera rotating. It’s not like the other top 6 teams have anything great at CB. Really like Munoz when he’s in the final third.

Obviously not Mbappe, but Kvara, @A_G's boy Yildiz, Doue, even Barcola. It means going getting one of these guys that are "not for sale" and making them for sale.

Again, Alvarez is a good example. Eve though I don't see it with him and he wasn't so set on Barça, he'd be here.

Not every elite buy can be "Oh, Vini's not renewing, let's pounce".

At one point you need to raise the ceiling, and at CF and LW there's very little ceiling raisers to go around.

The alternative to this is taking a chance on an up and coming talent like Diomande or even Kroupi, but since we seem unwilling to take that chance, we're back to having to make the guys with elite attackers sell or waiting to get lucky that one of them become available.
So basically a huge outlay to get an elite forward from a small group of clubs. I agree that's probably the only way to get a player like that. It's also very easy for most of these clubs to just say no since they don't need the money and not hard for them to convince players to stay either. Juve maybe not the same as these others tbh, they would be harder pressed if we went after Yildiz imo.

I get that the situation is frustrating but I'm not sure the club can be criticised too much for not doing that sort of thing to this point, or at least trying other approaches first. It's last resort stuff and a long shot in most cases. But it might be last resort time now. If we have the money and it won't screw us long term.

I don’t mind that, that’s a ridiculous price for him.

Can't fault the club, but at some point we need to do something. Big problem is that we keep waiting for that player, fail to get him, proceed to do nothing in January and then find ourselves in the same situation in the following summer.

We need a change in approach, imo. It going to costs us monetarilly or be a massive risk with a potencially WC player.

Imagine going into the 4th summer window running need to upgrade at LW and failing to do so?

It’s looking grim for me now. I don’t see what attacker we’re signing now that won’t be a settle job in some way.

Does it matter if we’re going to walk the league anyway?

CL is a long shot no matter who you sign.

Yeah it's the policy of neglecting a problem position every summer for years which has come home to roost. You get to a stage where there's a dearth of top class solutions on the market, inflation caused by average players going for stupid fees and then you're in a position where you either overpay now or overpay later.

If they think there's going to be a market correction then unfortunately they are sorely mistaken so it looks like it's going to be more half measures and stop gaps until they accept the bed they made and do something bold.

I don't like the fee for Barcola at all but we put ourselves in this position letting Nelli stink the place up for 4 years and never improving while we had money for hybrid CBs and GKs every summer.

Gunner come out of the closet any day now…
The MLS rumors are quite shocking if they're legit. Massive fan favourite, feel like the potential backlash wouldn't be worth the profit.

Exception being if he's pushing for an exit himself of course, wanting a bigger role etc.

I've got the best goalkeeper and the best centre half. All I need are the best wingers and the best forward. It doesnt matter what the rest are like.
