Arsenal Legend 1 - Alan Sunderland

“On by Stapleton to Sunderland, is this the hatrick now? It is, Alan Sunderland scores three and Arsenal score five.”

Five nil. A rout against the old enemy in 1978 of which Alan Sunderland led the charge with a hatrick. That hatrick was one of only two Arsenal hatricks against Tottenham, Ted Drake has the other. Alan Sunderland actually has more goals against Tottenham than any other Arsenal player with eight goals, Robert Pires is trailing him on six. While we are talking Sunderland records, throw in the quickest goal in a FA Cup semi Final, only took him 13 seconds against Liverpool. He wore number eight, had a perm and scored the last minute winner in the a cup final ALAN ALAN SUNDERLAND.

The man with the perm and the moustache joined Arsenal from Wolves in 1977 and cost us the grand sum of £220,000. In his seven years at Arsenal we were to get a fair return on that money. He played in three consecutive FA Cup finals for Arsenal and a Cup Winners Cup Final.

He was to play for Arsenal for seven years. Of that seven years he is best remembered for 10 seconds. Every young football fan grows up dreaming of scoring the last minute winner in the FA Cup final. Some just dream but Alan Sunderland lived it in the five minute final of 1979. One year earlier Arsenal had lost the FA Cup Final to Ipswich, that night the players vowed to make amends the next year. All going to plan. Two Nil to the Arsenal, Bang Bang, Two all, Bang, Sunderland, Arsenal 3-2, FA Cup Champions. It Really was the stuff of legends.

Like George in the 1971 Cup Final the emotion came out in the celebration. It was a release of aggression, emotion and just unbridled jubilation and not to mention screaming every foul word imaginable.

His FA Cup medal and the shirt he wore in that game ramin in a plastic bag in the garage of his house in Malta where he now lives. This years FA Cup final was in fact the first time in seven years since he saw The Arsenal in the flesh. However he still regularly watches Arsenal regularly on the TV and describes the current Arsenal team as having gears no other teams can reach.

He will no doubt be best remembered for his match wining goal in the 1979 FA Cup Final, however he was much more than just a one hit wonder. His motto when it came to sport was fight for every point and that was clear in every game he played for The Arsenal. Alan Sunderland, Arsenal Legend.

Arsenal Quotes

The club changed so much, I changed with it and football has changed with us... But one thing never changes: the 90 minutes still belong to the player, 90 minutes during which he is king.
