Terrible hot takes
We've gone backwards since 2016, which funnily enough coincides with the last time we had a settled midfield that included Cazorla :bounce:

We have been playing like we still got him

Why I dont know, we shouldn't have done it in the first place

No Wryer you're right , haven't seen anything organised just yet . Certainly aren't pressing twice we were caught with a compressing highline and no pressure on the ball carrier resulting in an easy ball over the top .

Still early in the season , much more interesting when Torreira , Xhaka and Lichsteiner fill in .

Absolutely. Having Torreira and Xhaka available will tell us a lot more about Emery's tactical plans.

I've noticed a few things different tactically. Defending in a 4-4-2 for one (we've done this when Özil has played centrally). That's a formation that makes it easier to press from the front (although we have only pressed sporadically in these friendlies). Also when we have the ball at the back the two full backs push very high up and the centre backs basically occupy the full back positions with one of the midfielders dropping in to make it a three at the back. That's also something new. There was a lot of passing around at the back yesterday trying to get around Chelsea's high press.

That's kind of normal for us though mate imo, have seen that for at least a season and a half .

Very similar to Guardiola’s tactics!

--------------------Cech
Lichtsteiner - Mustafi - Sokratis - Monreal
------ Ramsey -- Torreira -- Xhaka
------ Özil - Laca/Auba - Auba/Mkhi

How about that agin the top sides? Plenty of experience and guile.

We'll probably lose one if not both of our opening fixtures.

Some progress has been made through this preseason but it's going to take a lot longer than that to get rid of certain bad habits and build up chemistry.

1. We're a bit ponderous in our build up, with players holding onto the ball longer than necessary which leads to available passing angles, which could have led to the progression of the ball up field, being covered. I also sense an unwillingness to take the game on which is no doubt linked to fear of losing the ball in a highly dangerous situation. You also notice little things like players playing the ball to teammates on their non-preferred foot which again slows the play down.

2. You still see space being poorly occupied. There was a moment where Guendouzi was bringing the ball out under very little pressure, with Chelsea players falling back. At the same time, there were 3 of our players right behind the Chelsea midfield ready to have the ball played to them whereupon they could turn and threaten the exposed Chelsea defence. Problem was they were all hiding behind the retreating Chelsea midfielders and Guendouzi was unable to access them. In that passage of play he was forced to play a lofted pass to Kolasinac which led to a loss of possession. Guendouzi in particular has a tendency to take too many touches of the ball when he should be moving the ball on.

3. There are some inconsistencies in our pressing. There were some moments where certain players were a little too slow in closing down some of the Chelsea players which broke down our pressing. For example, there was a moment where ESR was slow in closing down Jorginho which allowed the latter to turn with the ball. There was another moment where nearly all the Chelsea players were covered in the build up but Mkhi was in two minds as there were two Chelsea players (Azpi & Cesc) in his vicinity who were unoccupied. Caballero was able to access Fabregas with relative ease in a dangerous position. If Mkhi had covered Fabregas, I highly doubt Caballero would have been able to play a perfect lofted ball to Azpi. Even if he was able to the fact that it was a lofted ball means that it would've taken longer for Azpi to bring the ball completely under his control which in turn gives our players time to drop back or reorient themselves. Alternatively, one of the CBs could have pushed up to cover Fabregas.

Edit:

4. Forgot to mention how the FBs, Kolasinac usually, were breaking ranks and darting out to harass a Chelsea player if they were further out on the wing.

4. Forgot to mention how the FBs, Kolasinac usually, were fond of breaking ranks and darting out to harass a Chelsea player if they were further out on the wing. This left a gaping hole between FB and CB. Reactive defending of this nature was a hallmark of Wenger's last years at Arsenal, just being pulled around by the passing of the opposition. If Kolasinac were to stay tucked in those cases, the Chelsea player would have no way of moving the ball forward. By running at him like a madman however, space opens up for the Chelsea player in possession of the ball to play it to a runner.

Very nice observation! I was watching a video that summed up our tactics against Chelsea that pointed out some of these exact same things.

Whilst there are many positives to look forward to, it will take time to get some old habits out of the system. The collective pressing is still disjointed and the positioning of the midfielders when we're attacking is still chaotic.

The video pointed out bad decision making of our defenders while trying to play out the ball - and that is the area which is very important to improve on.

Sarri said in yesterday's conference that it will be hard vs City (tomorrow in Charity Shield) since they had 2 years to blend with Guardiola and he had 3 weeks, which can be applied to Emery as well. It is a travesty that we open the season against City and it can be a disaster after which I expect a lot of knee-jerking and media salivating at the thought of like-bait articles about Emery's impotence.

Really interesting analysis here. For a large part it confirms what we already know, we're very good in attack but terrible in defence. But it also shows that we did try to press in the opposition's half last season (debunking the myth that we just never pressed), it's just we didn't do it very well.

Overall it's quite optimistic, but with some not insignificant caveats.

Over the last week or so I've watched highlights of some of Sevilla and PSGs biggest games when he was in charge. As well as all of Sevillas goals in the 2015/16 season, cuz I have no life. What I noticed is a huge amount of the goals his team scores are from wide areas with the ball drilled low across the goal. Much like Lacazettes goal against Chelsea in pre season. Wonder if we'll see the same here with Özil and miki most likely sneaking into those wide areas and playing it across to laca and auba.
