Arsène Wenger proposed changes to football

League is very weak
Having it every 2 years means you get to see top players and top teams. In what other sport do you wait 4 years for top teams and players to face off again?

France beat Brazil in a WC final today, and then we say “ok, let’s pack everything away and meet again in 4 years” etc, doesn’t happen in any other sport. In that time top players have declined, teams have to start a new cycle etc.

The CL is the best competition in the world because we see the best face off against the best, currently. Imagine waiting 4 years to see Bayern against Liverpool or PSG against City. Salah, De Bruyne, Ramos, Messi, Mane, Van Dijk, Neuer etc would have retired or be close to it.

Why wait 4 years to watch Messi play at the highest level in international football? Makes no sense. Why? Because it’s always been like that? Bit of a daft reason.

Instead we’re watching nations league, a nothing competition, or watching Harry Kane score 5 goals in the first half against San Marino.

The schedule was based to not clash with the olympics, aka all those other sports that pack everything away to meet again in 4 years. Football is huge but not sure it can actually compete with everything else like that.

We would have a proper event every 2 years if FIFA removed the stupid age limit rule for the Olympic events. Other than that the nothing nations league or Harry Kane scoring against San Marino are just UEFA problems, unrelated.

Don’t most sports have fixed World Cups? Rugby does and cricket has fixed dates for its tournaments.

I think the Euros and Copa America would work fine if you actually had them in the two alternating years with AFCON earlier in January.

Agree on the Olympics, the football tournament could be managed so much better than it is.

No one is tuning in to glorified U-23 games. It’s tricky with the Copa America and Euros right before this year but if you kept them in odd years so 2025 and the Olympics resorted back to 2024 it could work out.

You’d have three years out of four with an elite football tournament and the Olympics could get the chance to see Messi vs Ronaldo etc.

Looks like this will be a thing whether the players and fans want it or not.

Can the free to air channels afford the right every two years? Or will it become Sky/BT exclusive?
