Arsène Wenger proposes changing the football calendar

Lots of realism from Pep here. He's hinting at the reality: the best thing for football is for there to be more breaks for the footballers and not this solution, but given how little interest there is in taking care of the product of the sport and maximising its quality, and how much there is in exploiting it from various interests, this is something of a lesser evil.

I just wish that Wenger, as part of FIFA, were pushing more than the lesser evil. Which would just be getting rid of these stupid international friendlies and bullshit money-grabs like the Nations League and the Confederations Cup.

Why are people so resistant to change? Something needs to be done, why not at least give it a go for a while?

The only winner in this is FIFA.
FIFA generates the majority of its income through the WC. So having one every 2 years they figure will line the coffers more. For many FIFA member countries the money their FA gets from FIFA is very important and they will be onboard with anything that increases that revenue stream.

In my view a **** money grabbing idea! It’s taking the piss on a WC tournament set up that is an almost 100 years old tradition by now. I don’t mind getting rid of international friendlies etc. but having the WC every two years stinks to heaven!

Everything is about the money though, we know this, everything you watch has been modified to increase the revenue over the years - English football, European football, the increase in teams qualifying for CL, WC, Euro’s, the nations league, increase in friendlies etc, you still watch all that despite it diluting the game. Half of the PL basically qualifies for European competition now.

We had an international break last month, we have one again this month etc, this proposition will stop all that.

I think it’s romantic for the WC to remain every 4 years but this new proposition actually makes more sense, it means less meaningful games and more of a chance to see top players in elite competition.

Wenger will probably not even be alive if/when this happens and goes into use.

Think you are mixing two unrelated issues. One that I agree would need solving (getting rid of too many international friendlies), and one that doesn't need a change (having the WC every 4 years). Use the solution on first issue and keep WC and Euros/Copa America etc. as they are.

Thibaut telling it like it is:

"It's just a money game, and we have to be honest about it," Courtois said. "For UEFA, it's extra money and it's an extra game because it's on TV. Of course everyone wants to play, but look at how much both teams changed.

"If the teams had been in the final, there would have been other players playing. This just shows that we play too many games."

@kofigunner

"Next year we have a World Cup in November, we'll have to play until the latter stages of June again," Courtois added. "We will get injured. Nobody cares about the players. In June, after a long season, you'll have to play four games in the Nations League, you'll get two weeks holiday.

"That's not enough for players to continue for 12 months at the highest level. If we never say anything, it's always the same."

"They're against the Super League, but they just do the same. They put extra games, they made an extra trophy, the Conference Cup [UEFA Conference League] or whatever the name is. ... It's always the same," Courtois said.

"They can be angry about teams wanting a Super League, but they don't care about the players, they just care about their pockets.

"Now you hear that they want to put a European Championship and a World Cup every year. When will we get a rest? Never. In the end, top players will get injured and injured and injured. ... We are not robots. It's just more and more games, and less rest for us, and nobody cares."

Spot on Thibaut!!! Really disappointed and a bit disgusted with the hypocrisy from Arsène in endorsing this plan with FIFA, and backing it up with such facile and fatuous reasoning as he did in that interview given.

If the best national teams threatens to boycott this, it wont happen. Brazil, Germany, Italy etc. These countries can stop this without a problem.

This is a great win for fans, regular meaningful elite football. Not this crap where the season has been interrupted with international football that body watches, which we have again in November. None of this nations league rubbish either.

They will get more rest with this idea as there will be only one or two international windows in a season. So far we’ve already had two windows and have another one next month.

This is a bit misleading since the amount of games at club level is growing. The new Intertoto Cup, the expanded Champions League etc.
