That was a meltdown of an interview from Emery, so petulant that it’s not hard to see why this club got rid of him. Currently sitting joint 2nd in the league, had an incredible unbeaten run in the league, already have wins over both City and ourselves and your manager is coming out with nonsense that they won’t even finish top 5?
I’m sure his players enjoyed hearing their manager saying that.
What was the point of it? To force the board to spend money they’re not allowed to spend because of PSR? Idiot!
I think there's an element of confusion here.
Jacob Tanswell (the Athletic correspondant for Villa) has come out and explained that Emery uses the word "contender" to mean "favourite"

So what he's saying is we're not favourites for top 5. Not that we're not contenders.

Here's the tweet:

X

Which is still nonsense. We absolutely are favourites. But yeah he's saying it to force the club to do the business we need to do so that we don't drop off

Still 90 per cent of all Villa fans seem to prefer City winning the title rather than Arsenal
Almost every other fanbase prefers City. But I don't think its personal with Arsenal. Whoever is in a fight with City , rival fans will always choose City. They are just irrelevant, half of stadium empty all the time. No one cares if they win.

You might want to sit down when I tell you this...

90% of all football fans would prefer to see City win the title

(not me by the way, but that's the unfortunate truth)

Because PSR limits what you can spend based on your revenue. It’s a system rigged in favour of the already established clubs. Not rigged on purpose, but that’s the result.

We’re currently in the best period we’ve had in decades. Regular European football, top 4 league finish, champions league campaign, and some of the richest owners in the league.

Yet we can’t spend any money. Not because we don’t have it, we do. We’ve got incredibly rich owners, and we’ve got no debt. But because it goes against the PSR rules, particularly the UEFA ones.

Clubs like Sp**s and Man Utd can have season after season of spending hundreds of millions, being literally billions in debt (in Utd’s case) and performing like ****, and can carry on spending money because they’re revenue is high. We can be in the best period in our recent history and have to sell every window.

Emery’s net spend since being at Villa is about £35m as a result of this. He’s performing miracles given the resources available and every window it seems to get worse

They could build an 80,000 seater stadium in cash and this wouldn't be a PSR deduction. It could vastly increase revenues if it's friendly for concerts, other sports etc etc. And the match day revenue would go through the roof.

Surely CL revenue should boost your finances significantly.

Unai just can't cope with serious pressure. He lost the plot at PSG and here.

He's doing a great job at Villa. But he's not a manager that would seriously put them in a title race, nor is it really fair to expect him to.

Well we are expanding the capacity of Villa Park, but I think you have vastly inflated estimates of how much that will increase revenue. it will definitely help, but it's not exactly a quick win is it?

And it goes back to what I said above, that all comes back to squeezing the fans out of more money simply to get that revenue up to enable them to spend money that they already have just so the numbers on the accounts meets these rules.

They don't need the money. They have it and they want to spend it. But in your analogy you have to build a new stadium to enable you to generate enough revenue from the public to enable you to spend that money

Doesn't that seem a bit backwards?

this xg account must be so happy right now

and i watch full highlight aston villa vs wolves, even when wolves lose 1-0 at villa park but they created more big chance than villa while villa only created 1 big chance in entire game

Well aware that a majority regardless who they support would prefer City. However after a few visits to Villa Talk I was a bit surprosed by the almost hatred of Arsenal and everyone hoping for City, hardly without a mention of what a disgrace that club is.

Yousif Arsenal

Was on Vinai's payroll; misses 4th place trophy 🏆
Unai shouldn't said that villa deserve thier place in top 4 he maybe needed to say we not focusing in title race because that not our expectations currently but to say we shouldn't be top 5 is strange comment.

The team they got beyond thier starting 11 is not great so imo they kinda over achieving

Of all the teams capable of winning the league, if we don’t win it, I always want city to. Everybody knows what they are and that it is hollow and meaningless, which makes it pain free.

I’m aware of VillaTalk. If you think there’s no hatred for Man City on there then you’ve not looked very hard. They despise them

Yeah this is an enormous blow. Losing our best player, in a position where we already have significant injuries

Not good
Have a soft spot for Unai and therefore for Villa, since he was nothing but a gentleman and professional during his time here. It does seem there are parallels between what he is building and what we went through in the past few seasons. Punching above your weight with a limited squad and unable to cope with injuries and the full schedule.

I hope villa stick with him and the board back him. He and this team are a bright spot in this season. Some excellent footbal.

The irony with this is that central midfield is our position with the most depth. Yet the injuries are still piling up

Kamara, Tielemans, Onana, McGinn, Barkley, Bogarde, Buendia, Rogers can all play in that central midfield 3 but they're dropping like flies

Barkley and Onana already out, Kamara injured in the game before last and McGinn in the last game

Yes I'm just thinking under the current framework and how much revenue Sp**s are generating with concerts and their cheese room. Obviously Villa owners won't expand their stadium and then build a new 1 though and it looks like all the plans are already in place. Boosting it by 10,000 seems a little unambitious, although I don't know about Villa's waitlist for season tickets

I agree the rules are supporting the status quo and must seem unfair as it did with Arsenal for years when we didn't invest anything into the squad. Believe me I get it. At least with steady CL qualification will change your finances. What's the state of your injuries right now?
