Aston Villa: The Emery Era

Congrats on the loss. 🫡
Finally! A post from you that is actually true. You got there in the end, well done :)

Yeah terrible game from us. Played a few second stringers but it's not an excuse. We were absolutely ****.

Congrats on the win against Brentford. Hope you go far, and good luck in the league. Would like to see someone knock City off their perch and nobody better to do it than Arsenal (outside of Villa, obviously, but I'm not that crazy)

Very hot and cold Villa it seems. Capable but then also faltering in the cup competitions which you'd have thought was Emery's strong point. Fully expect them to be top 10 tho and will probably progress in europe.

How has Tielemans started? I had him on my wishlist for a long time but the pace of the game seems to give him issues.

Where do you reckon you'll finish this season? Nice squad you're building tbf

Exactly right. Our results in the league have been good, but in truth we were bad against Palace for 80 minutes, and we rode our luck against Chelsea. Things could look very different.

I think our injuries have really hindered us in the cups. Mings, Buendia, Ramsey and Carlos all being out means when we rotate our quality drops a lot. But again that's not an excuse, performances against Warsaw and Everton were really bad, regardless of the personnel

Tielemans is yet to shine. I was quite excited about him but he's shown no real quality yet. Certainly not enough to get in ahead of Luiz and Kamara.

Where we finish depends on how seriously we take Europe I think. If we weren't in europe I'd back us to challenge that top 6. But with Europe and our injuries I think we may drop away.

Very confident of Top 10, reasonably confident of top 8, but beyond that it's a lottery

Tielemans career has taken such a nose dive. His lack of energy to get up and down the field really doesn't suit the modern game unless he's your main creative outlet. I did want him here in the Havertz role and he would of been a better progressive passer than Havertz. But he won't defend aswell as Havertz. It's a little bit perplexing that he didn't discuss his role with Emery before signing. I don't really see where he goes from here and I doubt Villa agree to letting him go.

I think this is a bit exagerrated. But there's plenty of evidence to suggest he's unhappy. Which is fair enough, I doubt he thought he'd be signing for us and warming the bench.

The problem is, it's totally justified. He hasn't been very good, and he's just complaining when he's not playing.

There's no way he gets into the team ahead of Luiz and Kamara at the moment and until he does, moaning is just going to hinder his cause.

Emery knows how to use his strikers, Auba & Laca had their best season with him, Moreno at Villareal, now Watkins.
David Villa had his best ever season under him too, Cavani later too. Same with the likes of Soldado Bacca or Gameiro who he made to look like top strikers for a while.

But his pronunciation of ebening is funny so he doesn't meet our fogging estandards.

Emery lost the dressing room apparently (even though Arteta has beefed with pretty much all the same players).

The guy made Aubazette a thing and turned a literal fisherman in Bacca into 20+ goals a season's striker. There's something there.

Unfortunately, Emery was doomed here from the start.

- Toxic atmosphere on the stands post Wenger, less patience than with Arteta.
- Internal power struggle with Raul, Vinai, Gazidis, and later Edu and Sven. Couldn't get his players.
- Inherited a bloated, unbalanced squad of players who were phoning it in, and had to make it work instead of just tearing down their contracts and replacing them with expensive players.
- Had class but less charm, and the language barrier made him an easy target for the media, opposition fans, and our own fans/players.

He has good football values and possibly align more with what I expected post-Arsène than with Arteta but given the way fans behave I think Arteta is a better fit for Arsenal.

But happy to see him show what he can do when he's in an environment that doesn't set him up to fail (PSG, Arsenal).
