Aston Villa: The Emery Era

Emery lost the dressing room apparently (even though Arteta has beefed with pretty much all the same players).

Yeah same event different handling of it really. Things could've been different without the management changes in the background.

Unfortunately, Emery was doomed here from the start.

- Toxic atmosphere on the stands post Wenger, less patience than with Arteta.
- Internal power struggle with Raul, Vinai, Gazidis, and later Edu and Sven. Couldn't get his players.
- Inherited a bloated, unbalanced squad of players who were phoning it in, and had to make it work instead of just tearing down their contracts and replacing them with expensive players.
- Had class but less charm, and the language barrier made him an easy target for the media, opposition fans, and our own fans/players.

He has good football values and possibly align more with what I expected post-Arsène than with Arteta but given the way fans behave I think Arteta is a better fit for Arsenal.

But happy to see him show what he can do when he's in an environment that doesn't set him up to fail (PSG, Arsenal).

Arteta is a better fit to modern post Wenger Arsenal because he's a bully, he didn't take **** from no one and just kicked down the owners office door telling him to pay up or else. Immediately started putting Athletic guys on the clubs payroll taking control of the media narrative etc if he wasn't such a dickhead I'd be in awe of him I'd do it the exact same way.

Football ideas, developing players, coaching etc Emery is just clearly ahead. Arteta could coach until he's 60 he wouldn't be able to replicate Emery's Valencia Sevilla etc years.

He's respectful init. Some cultures, you show up not even trying to speak the language you get mocked anyways.

He's better for it anyways, he survived it, improved his English and he's gone on to do good things since that's how you do it.

Respectful or not you don't open yourself to ridicule like that, if you want to speak it practice beforehand.

He's managing Villa while Arteta is considered a rival to Klopp/Pep it's a bit of a joke being honest. Happy for Emery anyways he's won a European title since showing that it's Arsenal who bottled the 18/19 EL final not him and got to a CL semi. Still with his meek attitude he wouldn't have done a lot with us, Artetaball is gruesome half the time but we've got better players in than any other guy would've gotten us so that's nice.

It's simple, the board backed the players when Emery was here and decided he was the problem. When Mik came they backed him and decided the same players were the problem. Let's not forget there was rumours of discontent during that infamous winter 2020 run about the likes of Luiz even leading a revolt against Mik (probably overexaggerated), while at this point he'd already banished Özil, sent Guendouzi on loan, got rid of Torreira and was refusing to give Pepe a chance, all the same players Emery was sacked for not doing something with.

Been really impressed with them. Obviously got another level out of Watkins and Luiz who where already good players. Pretty deep squad as well, the likes of Cash and Digne look rejuvenated, even Bailey.

Glad for Emery most of all that he's had a chance to show what he can do in England again. The way the press treated him first time around still doesn't sit right.

Unai Emery following Arsène Wenger, was like Sir Alex then David Moyes. Felt that Emery was let go by Arsenal a bit too early. Doing well at Villa.

Yeah, he was a good manager and a good guy but Arsenal was wrong place/wrong time and following Wenger was an impossible task.

Glad he’s doing well, and doing it with a palatable team.

Another better manager than Arteta we not only could have had but did. It is what it is after Wenger people wanted a young manager, and had no patience for waiting on a new manager after many not me, felt we weren’t ruthless enough. Mik is a salesman, Emery is a football coach.

Think its obvious he's just not a big team manager, perhaps the big personalities (read: cvnts) at the biggest clubs don't jive with his personality but no question in my mind this guy understands football to the same level as the best managers.

Also can't believe he's turned John McGinn into a sub world class midfielder. Got guys like Bailey and Watkins playing to their potential as well, lovely stuff and happy for him.

I love Arteta, but I would have been happy for Emery to have been backed. He never had the best cards on the table.

I do think him moving here before he had a grasp on the language was a bit foolish. It was always a struggle to replace the gap Wenger left.
