If that’s the case, why is he in competition with Bellingham for England? He doesn’t play LW for England.

Well Tuchel's going to judge players on what he sees at club level and Rodgers mostly plays CAM at club level, but he's also said this

I don’t want our star LW signing to be talked about as a ‘LW’ option.

His best position is apparently LW yet he doesn’t play there for club or country. Like what are we doing here

I look at the wide options for the best teams in the world and I see natural wingers, yet so many of us seem okay with having Roger there as our full time Lw.

He's talked about as 'LW Option' by an international manager, who typically no F All anyway about players abilities he doesn't usually witness. Our resident Villa fan says he's best as left insider forward and his stats overwhelmingly back that up and it's not close, when he plays LW/LF he scores and assists way more.

So unless you want him as playmaker (not his thing) you put him nearer to goal.

You'd think Arsenal fans of all people would realise this through our Wenger years. He put all his best players in Henry, RVP, Alexis, Özil, Fabregas closer to goal and literally changed their positions to enable that

Rogers vastly overperforms his xG because he's an elite striker of the ball, Bacola isn't an elite striker of the ball so he equals his xG. This isn't rocket science maths here

He's a SS, potentially a False 9. He's not a winger. Emery rarely used him there, and he barely had any wingers to pick from. If he was a real LW option, Tuchel would use him there over Gordon or Rashford and play Jude central, but its never been a consideration.

The Eze and Gyokeres signing makes Rogers a luxury signing for now. His best position or role in the team is the same as Kai, Merino and arguably Eze aswell.

Barcola’s a better finisher than Roger’s but AM isn’t ready for that conversation.

Roger’s has very good outside the box shooting but that’s a slightly different skill set. Barcola has that far post Henry finish down and has a decent toe poke and near post finish too.

All finishes that are situationally specific to a LW who’s going to be bearing down on goal from the left side with a keeper coming towards him to close the angle. Watch a Roger’s comp and while impressive I’m not seeing the kind of goal scoring/finishing package we need for the LW.

Barcola should be option #1 and it’s not even close, I think the club feel the same though. We can get Roger’s if we want and my suspicion is that we’ll see movement on Roger’s only when the Barcola door is closed. Dreamland if we get both though.
Barcola also has amazing first step acceleration from a standing start. Question is how often would he get to use it against our dirty deep blocks?

I suspect its academic as PSG wont sell i think

Yeah, regardless of who's coming in, it's clear we have enough versatile guys. Should be focusing on signing players to be fielded in their best positions.

Nothing against the Rodgers, but this feels like another Rice at left 8 and not at 6 or Kai as a midfielder and not CF kind of scenario.

Meaning, he gets shoehorned, looks fine, but suddenly he gets played as a second striker/false 9/whatever his best position is and the player looks to go up another level.

Rogers would have made sense before the Gyokeres and especially Eze signing. Now though? I like the player but he makes less sense.

His best position/role in the 11 would be the same as Kais, Merinos, and arguably Eze aswell.

even they are wingers. This is the highest level of football brother.

Positional changes can happen with the most elite of players but there’s so much specialisation when it comes to positions that even a natural LW like Martinelli and Trossard will do better than Roger’s when it comes to the more intricate aspects of wing play imo.

We know Roger’s will be an improvement on Nelli on the ball but stuff like off the ball movement, positioning yourself to receive the ball, building partnerships with other players, these are all things that make me want a natural LW.

We’re the 2nd best team itw so why are we compromising?

Rogers will be a good longterm signing, but we won't see it until the 27/28 season. Think next season he'd be a player to play many roles, in and out of the team.

Next season, I imagine he'll face similar issues to Kai and Merino had, finding a regular position, filling in holes.

We shouldn’t be. You know who we could try to get..?

Nah, joke aside. I want us to show some aura in the window and act like we’re the best team in Europe. At least bid for guys like Yildiz, Diomande and even Kvara or Vini. Just to show that we mean business.

I’ve watched a lot of Roger’s and I was actually guilty of overrating him in the past based on his highlights. I remember having this discussion with @Dokaka who was the one who slowed my roll on him a bit. I’d have loved to sign Roger’s last season instead of Eze but I now think he’s a bit of a redundant profile now.

Roger’s is currently an xG overachiever based on this one season where his shooting from outside the box has gone up a level. On the surface that’s lovely but when I look at what our team needs I think a player who generates shots inside the box and matches his xG is a better fit than a player who takes lots of long range efforts, scores some and finishes the season with massive xG overachievement. Foden did the same thing a few seasons ago and @Sebastes called it out as unsustainable even though I disagreed with him at the time. Foden is still just as good of a shooter of the ball but you just can’t rely on players to regularly score long shots, they experience big swings in their end product if that’s their primary source of goals.

TL;DR: xG overachievement from outside the box is nice but we need someone who generates more volume and shots in the box imo.

Arsenal Quotes

This is a big moment of happiness...we waited a long time for this and the happiness is linked sometimes with the suffering, and the time that you have to wait....this was more important than all the other (trophies) we have twice won the double, but were not under pressure then like we were today.
