Maybe in 2023 we could give him the benefit of the doubt but this new @Riou has a conversion percentage as a poster that makes Kai look like Van Basten.

I can only hope once we sack Mikel and go back to winning trophies, I might get my mojo back.

Peak Riou was something else 🥲

So when Slot wins the league this year it should be dismissed, correct? Because this is most certainly not his team. The GK they bought and stashed is most assuredly not a rebuild. They're Klopp's players.
If five years from now the conversation is about Slot making his mark on this Liverpool team then yeah the 24/25 title (while impressive) should be dismissed.

I said that in my last post, Arteta’s trophy is dismissed in the context of his build. The trophy was nice but what was a bonus, everyone from the fans to Arteta and the board would admit that no? All the process and phases stuff happened after that season.
By the way, Liverpool is a great example because the night they won their CL, their supporters were still lamenting the league title drought and they celebrated ending that more than the CL because the CL drought was nowhere near as long.

Of course we're going to put more stock in competitions that we either have never won or haven't won for 2 decades vs something we just won a bunch of times in the very recent past. We also know based on that experience that winning smaller trophies is not necessarily a springboard to anything and would not satisfy most of the fanbase.
I don’t disagree with any of this. What I’m talking about is the lesser trophies not seeming to matter full stop. We haven’t won anything in ages.

Chiesa no English. He finally got it was a goal
That was a nice moment

Who is this Chiesa guy, anyway, and why have we not seen him much? He seemed to be the only Liverpool player trying

Whatever happened to this @Trilly ⬇️ ?

I miss this guy… he was way more fun.
That is very different context

I’d still stand by that btw. Imagine winning a title but then going on to have ten years of banter performances with seasons completely out of Europe unable to attract top players.

With ten years of guaranteed top 4 I’d still hope we could win it a few times, the stuff about signing top players is important. What I didn’t expect was for the club to still shop like we’re in the Europa

I just don't agree with this business of dismissing what someone won because of what point in the process they were in. When a guy comes into a team and wins a trophy right away, it's usually because the team they inherited was close but they still have to get it over the line.

Arsène inherited Graham's back 4, Dennis Bergkamp etc. If he had won nothing after his first title, I still don't think that discredits that title. It's a very slippery slope where we then nitpick every manager's achievement based on some subjective criteria that can't really be defined.

At what point has a manager "made his mark"? Is it a style of play? Is it a certain turnover from the squad they inherited? Have you not made your mark if you don't win a trophy? If that's the case then we have 90% of managers never making their mark. That's a far less effective measurement than something as objective as being in charge and leading a team to a trophy.

Even going back to your first point about them "not being Arteta's players", so what happens at a club like Liverpool where they have that top down structure? Are we going to nitpick Klopp's trophies because Edwards overruled him and was more responsible for building the squad?

What about Tuchel's CL with Chelsea? They were swirling the drain and he inherited a team going nowhere and won the biggest trophy on offer. He then failed to "make his mark" and was sacked by them. Dismissed?

It just doesn't seem to me to be a path that makes sense because there's far too much room for interpretation vs the more objective metrics of where you finish and what you got your hands on or didn't and in my mind if we're arguing that we need to care about the trinkets because we haven't won in a while then it seems contradictory to be dismissive of the last thing we won.

Either things matter or they don't. It can't be the case that we should be trying to win every little trophy but when convenient the last one we won is a "bonus" basically won by nobody because we've decided based on subjective parameters that it can be dismissed due to us not liking the job the manager is doing at present.

It's why no matter how much I dislike Emery, I point out that he did win the league at PSG (like everyone does) and it is technically a piece of silverware on his resume. He still won it. Arteta's FA Cup still required him to beat superior teams and get more out of the players than they had been showing in the prior couple of seasons.

If we're just dismissing that then I don't understand why we would care about another small trophy with "his players". What everyone wants is very obvious and it's not the small stuff. It also means that if Arteta is sacked this summer and somebody wins with "his players" next year then we have to dismiss them too until such time has passed that someone decides they've met the nebulous criteria of "making their mark" and their trophies "counting".

@Riou with a performance in this thread like this girl. Thought he was doing something and just comes across so disabled people think he's done it on purpose

Walked into this game at Wembley hoping for a Wenger-esque performance, turns out I was just 2015 Tim Sherwood...

We go again next year though!

Imagine how Arsenal (or Sp*rs fans for that matter) would get slaughtered until the end of time if someone created this metallic poster after they won the milk cup
