I never really rated Matic that highly personally. His role became very redundant quickly in modern football.
Pivots like Modric, Fernandinho and Rodri became the standard for defensive midfielders instead of big lumps who weren’t super athletic and couldn’t really progress the ball.
The Chelsea teams he won with had very strong back lines and world class forwards.

I don’t mind specialists, like I think a pairing of an elite defensive midfielder with an elite attacking midfielder is better than 2 who are mid at both. Obviously 2 who are elite at both are better but that’s chasing dreams.
Matic wasn’t elite at anything though.

The trouble with rating midfielders like Matic is that they played in the same era as Mousa Dembele. It's like how Neymar and Bale don't get the credit they deserve because you had Messi and Ronaldo doing their thing. It took a long time for me to be able to rate another midfielder after Dembele. De Bruyne maybe the closest thing since

It's crazy how much Chelsea fans overrate Caicedo. I mean, every fanbase overrates their players to some degree, but Chelsea really take it to another level.
