David Raya: Raya Con Dios

I listed multiple times Raya almost/did actually cost us last season, including those that didn’t come from playing from the back, and yet you guys just chose to ignore.

For the record, I do think David has turned a corner so I don’t expect the same poor first half of the season as we saw last time out.

And if you watched every single City game you’d see multiple times over a season where Ederson almost cost them a goal with a poor play. The odd mistake happens for everyone, especially when you play out from the back.

If Raya was making a disproportionate number of mistakes to cost this team goals we wouldn’t have had one of the best-ever PL defensive results last season. End of story.

Think youre exagerrating a little tbh. Considering he was coming into a new side with a completely different style of play, vastly higher expectations and intense scruitiny given how so many seen Ramsdale as being the better keeper, he did exceptionaly well and handled that pressure well.

Gabriel probably made more individual errors and had more wtf moments last year but doesnt get the same 'meh' feedback. Think our fanbase just doesnt like seeing us splash on keepers. Odd one given our checkered history!

I don’t think Raya had a preseason with us and was pretty much thrown in? It makes sense.

He’s done superb in the opening 2 games anyways, hopefully he will finally show why Arteta bizarrely decided to rock the boat in the fashion that he did.

I probably am tbh, and keepers errors get exaggerated. I think I’m just subconsciously pre meditating these guys who are on the cusp of calling him world class when he’s not even had a consistent season for us yet, and want to level the debate a bit.

Gabriel is a good shout, his first year was similar to Gabriel’s first few seasons where there was a player there but he made errors. I just want to see a consistent season from him.

Quickly becoming the best keeper I've personally seen play for Arsenal. Only weakness is his size, if he was 6"3 I think he'd be unbelievable.

The other candidates kind of popped off after leaving Arsenal and don't have anywhere near the same ability with their feet.

In general think we underrate how quickly (relatively speaking) we've raised the level of the entire defence. It's only 3-4 years ago Mari, Cedric, Chambers, Holding, Bellerin and Luiz all made 10+ appearances. Raya definitely benefitting from not playing in front of that lot..

It's true but he has done well all the same. He was good at Brentford before coming here too.

Realistically I'm not sure what more people really want from him.

Raya looked top class playing behind Ben Mee and Ethan Pinnock, hardly think that matters. He looks good whenever called upon, volume doesn't really matter.

In some ways I think it does. Ramsdale for example need to be kept busy otherwise his concentration seems to drop. Raya on the other hand is able to remain switched on even where he has very little to do.

Agree with point though - think he's proven himself. I can understand why fans may be frustrated with the likes of Matt Turner and some of the other keepers brought in to provide cover but Raya has been great for us so far.

I think too much has been made of Ramsdale's concentration comments and he admitted something every keeper feels. Especially for a posession based/dominant team.

I followed Raya and predicted he would be a massive improvement on Ramsdale when he was signed, but last season that wasn't quite the case. If these openers are anything to go by though, we might be in business.

For me the biggest obvious improvement over Ramsdale is how good Raya is at crosses and defensive set pieces, Ramsdale is a total liability on those imo. Of course Raya also more calm on the ball etc but purely goalkeeping wise that stands out for me

Was already a top 3 GK in the league at Brentford and Arteta decided to upgrade when he became available. It was never that trivial as some made it out to be.

He was poor in his first 6 months here, made a lot of mistakes and I was wondering if I was going to ever trust him again.

He’s started the season amazingly so I’m feeling much more confident now.

There's a good chance Raya will win the August POTM award for Arsenal. Hilarious when you think about Arteta trying to sign his replacement all summer.

You kind of never leave Arsenal. How many comebacks do you make? At one point it will turn out to be a bad move. We all love the first Rocky but I'm not too sure about the last one.
