David Raya: Raya Con Dios

Yeah, Raya wasn't at fault for either of the goals.

He obviously wasn't at fault for the first goal. If anyone thinks Raya should have been positioned in front of our goal and not closer to Gabi so that he can give him a passing option, then that person hasn't watched any of our matches this season or noticed how we like to build out of the back.

On the second goal, it is easy to think that Raya should have saved it because the shot wasn't in the top corner, but if you look at the movement of the ball it becomes very clear that the shot was almost impossible to stop. The ball knuckles in the air and despite going to the left (Raya's right) the ball swerves to the right (Raya's left) before going back to the left (Raya's right). The movement of the ball meant that Raya could not get an early jump on the ball.

On the replays, you can see Raya shift his weight to his left foot once the ball swerves and then he shifts it back to his right. The movement of the ball and not its placement made the shot unstoppable.

Nothing Raya could do, but our midfielders and defenders should have closed down the attacker much, much quicker.

Should be doing much better on their second goal. Granted he saw it late, but I expect someone of his level to do better there. First genuine mistake I think I’ve seen him make that’s really costed us this season imo. Still one of our most important players

He's good, very good actually. The height is always going to be an issue. That looked savable if we're being harsh.

He's been excellent. His distribution and poise are unimprovable. But I wish we signed Joan Garcia. The margins are so tight that I fear Raya's height means he'll never be counted among the all-time Premier League greats like van der Sar, Allison, Cech etc.

I think people who are/were critical of him will look back at what he has done this season and value him more in retrospect. I've been guilty of it myself.

Not sure how anyone can blame Raya for the first goal, he was in that position for the option of the easy pass! No one expect Gabby, of all people, to pass it straight to Evanilson.
The 2nd goal I thought at the time he should be doing better, watching it back the flight of the ball (dips, and swerves like a knuckleball) plus Raya wouldn’t have the best view with it coming through players - goalkeepers nightmare.

It would be achievement in itself if we're able to win a major trophy with such a poor keeper.

I'm actually getting a little frustrated with him. Had some crazy moments today but most of all, he oozes this lack of urgency. We need to win games but he's so slow all the time. His foot on the ball, passing it sideways after delaying, and then kicking it straight to the other GK.

Man up Raya.

He looked nervous today and was far from his best. IMO it’s just part of the modern game where the keeper is no longer just a shot stopper and someone who commands the box. Instead he’s basically a sweeper and plays a big part in build up play and distribution so these types of mistakes are going to be more common than they used to be as you end up sacrificing some of the traditional goalkeeping skills for the ball playing ability. On the other hand his goal kicks and distribution are insanely accurate and his contribution to our build up play is why we are arguably the best team in the league at doing it. Once we win the league his status as our best keeper in the Emirates era (at least) will be sealed.

Yeah, not his best game, lucky that the ball fell to Brobbey after he fumbled the cross, it wasnt even on target despite Kai's block
Distribution was very good (nothing new here)

His long kicking is a bit overrated. He has great long throws and normally comfortable with his short passes, but his long balls often go to absolutely nobody. Often there aren't even offensive players close to it.
