I rate Ramsdale highly but this is great news.

Competition for playing time almost always brings out the best in everyone, and having two options this strong speaks well for where this team is at. This is 'big team' sort of stuff.
One of them will be gone next summer. No team has 2 starting pl keepers

Struggling to get my head around this.

Part of me says "big club behaviour". Other part says "misdirection of transfer funds.

I see Ramsdale as great, but imperfect. Can anyone whos watched Raya closely and often quantify to me how much better (if at all) Raya is?

He is better aerially, clearances, and saves better. Almost all the important goalkeeping stats.

Onana already got lobbed twice in 2 games.
Don't be saying previous AM favourite Onana may not be all he is cracked up to be lol🤔.

To be serious Onana is a good keeper.
Thing is all all of them get done & make errors from time to time. You just notice it more when it's ur own.

Ramsdale had a average/poor 2nd half of last season.
The previous season & a half he has shown he is one of the best young keepers on the planet.

It is a competition; no guarantee Raya will win he could light a fire under Ramsdale.

Statistically he was second worst keeper in the league after the World Cup. He was really poor

GK is the arguably the position that is most likely to win you points all on it's own. Because there is only 1 GK playing at a time, we think that you can only have 1 really good goal keeper in the squad. And maybe we don't want a repeat of the distracting drama around Almunia v Lehman, or Martinez v Leno.

In the end though, I want the one who is most likely to win us those points, and we are more likely to get it with this setup. If one of them gets hurt, I want someone to step in who can allow the team to play the way it is designed to (it's not like Ramsdale hasn't been injured a few times). If we go far in the cups, we could be playing well over 50 matches. There is plenty of game time available for two goalkeepers.

Leave managing the long term situation to Arteta.

Who rotates two goalkeepers? Who has 2 30 million goalkeepers in the world? The only reason you spend 30 million on a new goalkeeper is because you not happy with your first choice keeper. You see city or Liverpool spend 30 million on new keeper for competition? Let’s not spin this. If Ramsdale was a great keeper this would not have happened

What stats rate him that low? I am not a big fan of his but i don’t think he was a Hugo Lloris level liability. Plus our defense as a whole was pretty crap second half can’t all be Ramsdale’s fault

Im coming around to the idea. Never really watched Brentford but the consensus among many is Raya is better with his feet. As for Raya being 183cm compared to Ramsdale's 188cm. I dont think that matters, reach is less but the smaller stature should allow him to get down to ground quicker. Ramsdale always had a weakness getting down low to this near post.

I also think this signing will send a message to the rest of the squad not to take anything for granted. This isnt piss take free wage Arsenal anymore. Even if you do well, you could still be replaced.

Seems surreal Ramsdale could viably leave next season, or he levels up and becomes an even greater keeper. Its one of those two.

Although when you think about it, Ramsdale was signed for 25m from a relegated Sheffield United. Could have been a stop gap all along.

Arteta isnt ****ing around is he

This increases our chances in the FA Cup and Carabao cup significantly as well since GK is a pillar to how we play and we don't lose ability swapping them out.

Our worst team looks something like:

Trossard, Eddie, Nelson
Havertz Viera
Jorginho
KT, Kiwki, Timber, Tomiyasu
Raya

I think that depth is pretty ridiculous but we'll likely never see that team play together since you'd add a few main guys here and there, a little sprinkle I shall say. 🤏

You don’t think CL Timber and CL Raya will force their way into the first XI?

Ngl I don’t think it’ll be long until they get a starting role in the team imo.

Doubt we ever see that midfield trio, not enough steel in there.

I think he'll rotate Timber and Zinchenko depending on the opposition and to keep Zinchenko fresh. Also think there's a chance he keeps using Havertz up to depending on how the season starts and you might see Jesus brought back slowly, being used as a sub for RW/CF.
