I looked like to me he was struggling to get around the pitch at times.

There were even a few times where he even gave up chasing down balls and 50 / 50's. That is not what Rice does.

He still played pretty well but it's clear he's running on empty physically.

Of course he doesn't look healthy. His hamstring has been fvcked for more than 6 months but Arteta has insisted on playing the crap out of him.

It was well worth it for that sweet PL trophy. You should take you pussiness to the Samaritans, they could do with your feelings.

Rice is living the dream winning the PL, playing in the CL final and in the World Cup and you have some ***** on the internet who has never met him crying for his condition.

All sportsman always carry an injury, listen to NBA players and footballers, they are NEVER fully fit. There is no way he is coming off in a WC game if he thinks he can manage it.

I have listened to enough podcasts with players, ex players etc, these guy have the mindset to push themselves to the edge with injuries, minutes are like gold to these guys.

He’s also top 3 leader of the team, they are chasing a goal against Ghana, his deliveries and set pieces were the biggest threat etc.

Anyone who engages in even the slightest bit of physical exercise on a regular basis will be carrying some niggling injury. Ask any runner or regular gym goer and they will tell you about some problem that's affecting them.

Only fat arm chair couch potatoes whose idea of exercise is picking up the ****ing remote would think this is somehow something out of the ordinary.

Rice is the one complaining to be fair, mentioning his woes in every interview and clutching ice packs for the media to see in his usual performative manner. There are guys like White who played with injuries silently and we had no idea, you can't blame people for reacting to what they see.

You're right though, there are some taboos in that industry that many of us simply won't understand - like saying no unless you are ruled out by someone else or have one leg. I noticed Doku came in for a lot of stick for wanting to witness his first born being born during the world cup for example.

It seems saying no or trying to be savvy about your playing time can negatively impact your career, hence forcing themselves beyond reason.

It's exactly that.

There's a story about Mourinho never playing a player again after he refused to take injections.

Wenger refused to give Vieira time off after the 2002 World Cup and kept playing him.

IIRC - Arteta wasn't happy with Rice when he asked to come off against Sp**s complaining about a back issue in 2023.

Playing football at the highest level is a privilege. They get paid millions. The least they can do is put their bodies on the line and give back to the sport that is giving them generational wealth.

I have no sympathy for any of them - I don't know them personally and they are going home to their mansions and trophy wives at the end of every game.

The Doku story brings this expectation even more to life. The likes of Keane were saying he would still miss his newborns birth if he could do it again.. Unless its a grade tear - you are expected to manage the pain through injections.

I saw that Keane thing as well

I was surprised by his answer but yeah him saying he wouldn't miss a game kinda confirms what you were saying.

Racehorses come to mind. They can earn millions for their owners, but when they get injured, they lose their value and are often treated like garbage. I used this comparison because, even though football players earn millions for simply kicking a ball, they are still flesh and blood. Their careers and health can come to an end in a single moment, and that can very well be the result of being overplayed.

Let's say Arsenal invests £100 million in a player and then overplays him to the point where his health collapses. That £100 million quickly becomes a bad investment. Players need to be properly taken care of so that they can enjoy long and successful careers.

Every player is playing through some sort of niggle or discomfort. That's just football. You're never going to play totally pain free.

From a selfish fans points you have to draw the line when it's affecting the players performance level on the pitch, it's true for Saka and I feel will be for Rice soon enough if he carries on.

Give these guys and Saliba a month off after the WC. We can cope.

They maybe flesh and blood but unlike racehorses -players rake in millions in addition to the owners - and can enjoy the fruits of their labour.

The schedule is the schedule and if you want to win the most competitive tournaments, you have to play your best players. How many games are there in a PL or CL campaign that we can afford to lose by resting key players?

If you want to optimise for your players longevity more than the teams immediate success - then you can rest your players every mid-week when you're playing three on the trot (which is pretty much most weeks) - but then don't expect to win trophies with that strategy.

I don't think we can count on Rice for the first few months of the season as England will clearly run him to ground this world cup. MLS better be ready

Saying something like "Arteta has ruined this one, or that one" is idiotic nonsense.
Check how many minutes Yamal has played so far, he isn't even 19.

If you want to win trophies, you play your best players when they are fit.

Did you expect that he will not play for England?
Of course he will play, being one of the most important players.

It's Keane, probably some performative bullshit for the camera. Doesn't he also have his kids names tattooed on him.

Anyone saying they'd rather go to work than be present for their child's birth either doesn't have kids or should have them taken away. Not even some surgeon who misses it because he's busy saving lives, nah I'll miss the most important moment of my life because I have to go play sports with drunk spastics yelling at me because I kick a ball good.

That's not even selfish, it's the whole point of having physios and doctors at the club. These guys aren't hired to keep you healthy for life. They're there to squeeze the most out of you during your contract.

It's not an indictment of them either, it's just what it is. They are often great people and do care, but they work for the club, not you, and their priority #1 is to get you out on the pitch as close as possible to your best self.

On another note, preferential treatment of players health wise within clubs is a profoundly under-reported problem. If you are considered a worthwhile long-term investment - big brand, immense potential etc. - you will more often than not be treated with 10x more care and consideration for your future.

If you're a random squad player or a star reaching the latter end of your peak? Unlucky, sit down and take these ****ing injections and go run 14km while your hamstring converts to Islam in pure desperation.

How do you seriously think this is a good argument. He's playing way too much football and there are massive concerns about his long term health.

We've just seen Ansu Fati go from their next big thing to a Brighton reject because he played too much ffs.

This is reality of elite football.

It is obvious that Rice needs long rest.
But the fact is, longer he doesn't play, smaller are chances that Arsenal will win big trophy next season.
And people must accept that.

I've already said that Rice needs long rest.
It also means that chances to win title again are smaller.
Same goes for Saliba, Saka and any other important player in Arsenal.
I have accepted that.

Anyway back to Rice reckon it's the glue factory next for him. Five 50+ game seasons in a row playing a high intensity style and he's already talking about the pain, yes he likes playing up for the cameras but I think he's genuinely close to breaking.

It's a fear for sure. Considering how he plays it's borderline a miracle it hasn't happened yet.

Dude has spent his entire career putting in massive shifts and constantly doing bursting sprints on defense, the latter part being notorious for injuries because you're reacting to something which often puts your body into a worse position than a premeditated run.

Having that type of athleticism is a huge asset of course but it's also a curse on your long term fitness.

Arsenal Quotes

The club changed so much, I changed with it and football has changed with us... But one thing never changes: the 90 minutes still belong to the player, 90 minutes during which he is king.
