Declan Rice: Bend It Like Decam

More like Arteta needs to get sacked for running the first 11 into the ground. The guy's nuts for not rotating his squad.

Almost all our starting players have had an injury this season.
How can players in the NBA can play back to back games and having to play 100 games per year without any complaining but football players having at least 3 days rest after every match complains about running into the ground?

This is kind of my point though, apart from the fact that 'covering everyone's arse' is giving him way too much credit.

He thrives when he can chase the ball and tackle people but needs to improve a lot in build up play and creating for others. Don't tell me that's not his job he's a midfielder.
Ideally, you want him to improve in those aspects, but ideally you want any footballer to be as well rounded as possible anyway. It's a tall task.

Rice isn't a metronome or a creator, that's clear, he's a box-to-box or a deep destroyer. But he's world class at what he does, you just build around him. I always compare him to Kante, they both excelled next to Jorginho. That's where we've failed, giving him that sort of partner. Jorginho is the ideal profile but he got old. Hopefully bringing Zubi in changes things, also need Ode to be his old self again.

You saying that just as Tatum's season probably ended today because of a nasty injury is so funny.

If you play average star player minutes in the NBA and play every single game in the regular season, you still play way less minutes overall than a footballer, by some distance.

Football is brutal on your body, it's not even comparable to any other team sport in terms of wear and tear. I genuinely don't know anyone who's played professionally who didn't play with some sort of pain 9/10 games and have pretty serious knee and/or hip pain post-retirement.

There's a reason why every single footballer is shredded these days, you just cannot keep up without being in the best shape humanly possible.

In football, the games are much longer, there are no breaks except for the half time break, and you cover a far larger area.

The NBA schedule is grueling as well, but anyone who has played both sports would tell you that the running involved in high level football is absolutely insane. It requires crazy conditioning and is very harsh on the hamstrings etc.

Once they get in the playoffs everyone is giving it 100%, which is not always the case in the regular season.
The intensity is something else, even with all the commercial breaks and games are played every other day until the finals, so it's a marathon.

You see so many players fall to injury in the playoffs and that's a sign that they're burned out and don't have enough time to recover.

I think in basketball it's easier to get an injury than it is in football simply because you're using your whole body at the same time. Hands for dribbling and feet for running, stopping on a dime etc.

Add to the fact that the players are much taller and heavier than a footballer and things can get messy real fast without the proper training.

Both sports are brutal on the body when they're played as often as they are today and that's only because of greed. Nothing more, nothing less.

This isn't because of fatigue, but the intensity of the games. The majority of injuries during the playoffs are results of players being pushed, tweaking a knee, ankle, whatever.

If you judge it by a per minute basis in terms of injury risk basketball is indeed riskier, by quite a margin.

It isn't because of the schedule or wear and tear though. Muscle fatigue and the injuries that can come as a result of that are much more prevalent in soccer because you're not taking breaks and play far more minutes. Basketball is much more of a contact sport (still, despite all the rule changes) so you get far more ligament tweaks, finger injuries, shoulder injuries, stuff like that.

Your point about them being more at risk because of their size is true of course, but attributing that to the sport itself is maybe a bit misleading considering they'd have the same struggles in any athletic activity.

Fatigue means inflammation. Playing every other day means there isn't enough time to get it down fast enough. Then there's the constant stress on the tendons due to sudden movements, jumping and the pressure caused by the weight you carry.

It's not just fatigue, but it plays an important role in injuries because the often you do a movement, the bigger the risk is and the schedule in the NBA playoffs is ridiculous.

You can maybe nurse a small injury after an intense game if you're playing once a week, but every other day is a sure way to aggravate it.

Regarding the struggles of tall athletes in other sports, that is true. Unless we're talking about baseball, of course.

I think fans underestimate the physical toll. Most of us have never even torn a muscle. I once strained my hamstring and I was in so much pain. I can't imagine a hamstring tear.

I think it was Beckham who said he knew it was time to retire when just getting out of bed was giving him a lot of pain.

Had a small tear once, definitely hurt like a ***** but it was nothing compared to the dreaded knee injuries. The few times in my life I've seen grown men genuinely scream in agony is when they tore an ACL. One of the guys I saw do it had also broken his arm as a kid and he said he'd rather break his arm 10 times again than go through an ACL tear just in terms of pain.

Can remember hearing Van Nistelrooy screaming in a training session, pretty sure that was an ACL. Was live on SSN at the time. Think it was just before they signed him from PSV.

Why Bruno Guimaraes plays every minute of every match for Newcastle?
He plays similar position like Rice.
Salah and Van Dijk same for Liverpool.
You can find many players who play every match for their team, nothing special about that in Arsenal.
NUFC played once a week most of the season. The one season they played in Europe we all know what happened to them with the injury list. It piled up and that severely affected their form to the point Eddie Howe was on the verge of getting sacked.

Saliba has the most minutes of our team this season I believe and he also played every EPL game last season along with Gabriel IIRC.

Salah used to suffer injuries but has been lucky this season. That and the manager did slight tweak in his tactics which allowed Salah not to track back often. He stays up for the counter I believe.

I believe the limited numbers of attacking players in the squad this season had a domino effect with the injuries. Jesus’s injury, Ødegaard’s, and Sterling being **** led to the whole attack getting overplayed. It was a matter if time for Havertz as he played non-stop. Merino got pushed forward so Rice gets no rotations as a result.

The only unlucky injury was Gabriel’s because we had 11 days rest when he got it in the training.

They aren’t tbh? None are anywhere near what you’d call overweight but I find the Salah’s and CR7 to be a level above in terms of low body fat.
