This thread has taken a seriously dark turn, and I think it should be locked for a significant period of time @mods.

I feel like the evolution in the team lies in replacing Partey. Rice seems to be changing the left 8 role into a box to box on the ball role. I don't see the point in pinning him in front of the back 4 when his best asset is driving and carrying.

Therefore we need his partner to complement him. We need an elite passer/ press resistant/ physical/ with good positioning.

He's hardly put a foot wrong so far but I felt he and Jorginho where very similar to the Flamini/Arteta midfield today. You don't need both of them in a game like this.

Shows how poorly all the other 8s have done, tbh.

Thought both Rice and Jorginho were good again today, even though ideally you don't need both in a game like this as you say.

Not enough spark for me. Can't help but feel Rice looks clunky the further forward he goes although he's obviously a trier. He's a 6 all day.

People ask for creativity but if the players he is supposed to pass as first choices are Martinelli and Zinchenko they're being unfair.

You could see on the other side Saka was doing his thing even with Havertz being Havertz. Rice is not the problem.

Surprisingly a quite game from him still did his job without big issues.

Just comeback from break without injuries without him in midfield we simply f**ked.

He basically brought West Ham’s dead football with him. Statistically he is doing well everyone around him is struggling

In January, with limited funds, i think signing a more traditional LB is the answer, one with pace and the ability to overlap. Then we can go Rice 6, Zinchenko and Ødegaard 8s.

Timber should play in midfield. I see him having a similar career trajectory to Frenkie De Jong. CB to DM to CM.

What I love about him is the conviction he has in his game. When he passes the ball it is done with conviction…nothing underhit or overhit. The same with his tackling. Also when he goes on those barnstorming runs you just know he will get past his man.

A really superb player. Scary thing is that with a bit more refinement in his game which will naturally come, he has the potential to become the best midfielder in the world.
