Definition of a gem

Mr. Agreeable
Mod if this has been done. I apologise. Please move it. I did try search.

So a bit of debate in other threads as to what qualifies a player in the ranking of 'Gem'. We've seen Arsenal, particularly in AW's time, pick out some of the world's greatest talents before anybody else knew they even existed. Buying for cheap and eventually and unfortunately sold for more. Or at least the player proved to be well worth the fee paid.

So what qualifies a player as a 'Gem'? We've acquired Holding for a good fee but some posters will rightfully argue we have no idea what his ceiling is yet.

At what age do we decide a player was a not worth the initial fee or well worth it for that matter? Seems the question of "What is the last Gem Wenger bought" is a bit unanswerable until all the players he has signed have shown us what they are made of. Which obviously could take years

A gem is a precious stone you polish up to shine brightly.

In other words someone with potential that you improve further. Whatever you bought them for, they're worth more.

In other words if you argue that Sanchez has improved as a player since joining Arsenal, and is worth more not just due to inflation, he's a gem.
