A calm and collected individual.
Villa have always liked Smith-Rowe, and Emery gave him his chance here years ago

Thats the only way I see this happening, as an outright bid would require a huge outlay.

Luiz is key player for them. Esr is an injury prone player who has shown nothing for long time. Just because a manager like you once doesn’t mean he will always like you

Can operate as both an 8 and as a 6 in game, gives our midfield more fluidity and puts less of a burden on Ødegaard to drop into deeper zones to help during our first and second phases.

The only issue I have with him would be his level of physicality, would prefer Paqueta ahead of him for the role specified.

Would be happy if we signed him, but rather would do a loan for Ruben Neves and then going for either Douglas Luiz/Paqueta/Raphinha in the summer.

Maybe

You're wrong, no?

Agree with this, but it does feel like our squad is bloated in midfield.

Maybe getting rid of 1-2 players before a move like that

Whatever we choose to do, we need to get the next couple of midfield purchases right, losing Xhaka & so far Partey from last seasons midfield & replacing with Rice & Havertz seems like a taking a step forward to then take 2 steps back.

I'm intrigued to see what Edu & Arteta does here. Where do they see Rice long term? Do they want him sitting as the deepest of midfielders so focus will go on a number 8 like Luiz, or do they see him as more box to box, so focus will go on a distributer like Zubimendi or Neves?

In truth we actually need both considering the likelihood of Partey, Elneny & even Jorginho leaving over the next couple of windows, but lets see. Maybe a talent like Vermeeran and then one of the more established names already mentioned would be the best way to do things?

What do you think about Andre from Fluminese? much cheaper also.

Luiz is a good player, but I don't understand why we have tunnel vision on targets. It's always the same PL players we've been linked to before as if no alternatives exist anywhere else. The only way we get him is if we overpay.

Villa will surely be asking for £60-70m for him. I don’t need to comment on how stupid that would be. Really good PL player who would fit our midfield but his ceiling is clear.

Havertz aside, the strategy of signing PL players has served us well over the last few years. We went from having barely a top 6 quality squad to a top 2/3 squad.

Hmm it’s a higher floor recruiting from the prem, but our stars are all from abroad as Saliba, Gabriel, Martinelli and Ødegaard have shown. Partey who’s injury prone, but good when we got 30+ appearances out of him.

Saka the exception here being from academy.

Compare that to our prem signings, the prem ones ain’t all that.

Agree that a lot of the prem signings have been floor raisers, but they’re often equally as important as the glamorous ceiling raisers. It depends what you want from the LCM role.

I’m quite content having a really solid player there like Luiz, that would allow guys like Martinelli/Jesus ect to flourish down that left hand side.

It’s all hypotheticals though as this deal isn’t happening any time soon.

Cause we have practically no scouting team. It will be pl players or recommendations from coaches or manager

As shown in the quoted post below, this is the prevailing opinion on PL recruits.

But this is negated by a quote from Martin Keown almost 10 years ago when asked by Piers Morgan why we no longer recruited the best players.

"You want to get the best players but what you need is the best team" and proceeded to mention Bergkamp, Henry & Pires being flare players but the likes of him & Parlour adding something else to the mix. It's about finding the right balance.
Luiz, Mbuemo and something called Koleosho?

You know we’re back in the champion league right? That window screams Europa Conference League and Rafa Benitez.

I don't mind signing PL players; I was advocating for it when Liverpool were employing that strategy with great success. But we shouldn't have tunnel vision. Getting tunnel vision for PL with our LCM signing has screwed us already with Mount and Havertz being our main options in the summer.

There were so many good non-PL LCM options in the summer. Wirtz, Kudus, Szoboszlai, Simons, Gravenberch, Le Fée, etc. My preference was actually a PL player in Mac Allister but Liverpool moved too quickly to get him. ****ers also got Szoboszlai and Gravenberch in addition to him.

Obviously, most of these players have made moves already now, but I don't get why we've never been linked with someone like Le Fée who fits the bill perfectly and wouldn't cost a fortune.

We need him more than Neves imo. Ødegaard is so weak. Weaker than Özil when Özil was 10 years old. We need physical players behind him.
