lol...c`mon behave....but if you want to count a keeper that concedes 4 goals occasionaly as consistant..thats your issue...

How many games did Almunia play? How many poor games did he have? Certainly no more than five. I'm 100% sure that Denilson had more poor or ineffective games than Almunia did last season.

If you want to call conceding 4 goals in just a single game in a 40-game season "occasional", than that's your issue.

August Player of the Month – Alex Song

Alex Song has flourished in his role as the deepest midfielder, his tackling and pressing key to Arsenal’s impressive start to the season.

It’s funny how a fresh start can result in a change in attitude and fortune. Arsène Wenger had mulled deeply during the previous season on how to reinvigorate his troops after what was becoming a dour campaign. His answer was to switch to a 4-3-3, playing a high intensity pressing game and bringing much fluidity to the side.

Pre-season failed to excite his boys but as soon as the real stuff started, they notched it up a few gears. The key to the early success has not been just the new system, the players willingness and attitude has been the most impressive. Fabregas has been liberated in the centre allowing him to dictate at will while behind him Alex Song and Denilson have provided the double shield, hassling and harrying opposition. While Denilson has steadily continued his unnoticed form last season Cameroonian Alex Song has been given extra responsibility and has gained an extra stride or two.

“I am the first defender in the midfield, if you like,” he said. “That means Cesc and Denilson can push forward a little more. I’ll stay in the middle so that I can stop counter-attacks and close passes down. I’ve seen everyone want the ball when we have it and everyone pressuring it hard when we don’t.”

His presence in the middle has already seen him make twelve successful tackles in his two league games (two unsuccessful) and while his reading of the game is not yet as developed as Denilson’s, that has still not deterred him from making fourteen crucial interceptions. There is an increasing level of evidence to show a specialist tackler is becoming of greater importance but come the bigger games, it must be complemented even more importantly with the effective reading of play. Arsenal’s dominance against Manchester United, despite their 2-1 loss saw the Gunners make 37 interceptions to United’s measly eight although the tackle counts were very similar.

Alex Song was at the forefront, breaking down play the most frequently and has also shown confidence on the ball. He hasn’t always been to everyone’s tune but with performances like these, will ensure his name is sung for months to come.

i cant help but feel that many months ago, your championing of denilson was partly ironic, and i read a number of posts from you on the subject.

Now though i feel you, like wenger, have a somewhat blinkered view of denilson and that defending his abilty/potential/performances etc has become something of a one man crusade for you! is this true would you say????

not that i have anything against him; he's ok - great stamina and commitment, but lacks a bit of concentration at times and is prone to sloppy passes/tackles. he could well be a very useful player for us. but still i dont understand quite why you love him so much, other than his fantastic attitude to the game. or is that the reason? or would you just like to be his boyfriend? :)

And the winner is......Thomas Vermaelen!

Vermaelen is EA SPORTS Player of the Month!

Thomas Vermaelen has been named the EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August.

The Belgian defender scooped the official Club prize after a string of powerful performances at the heart of the Arsenal back four.

Thomas made a dream debut at Goodison Park, heading home Robin van Persie's free-kick to give Arsenal a two-goal lead. They went on to win 6-1 as the new boy adapted quickly to English football.

The summer signing from Ajax was just as impressive at Celtic in the Champions League, making a number of timely blocks and interceptions while developing a strong partnership with William Gallas.

Thomas' standards remained high in his three other August games against Portsmouth, Celtic and Manchester United and he has been recognised by the Arsenal fans with 34.9 per cent of the votes cast.

Gallas, who scored three goals last month, finished second in our poll with 22.5 per cent. Andrey Arshavin was third.

I'm with Beck and Boots on this, Denilson for me as well. He's damn a blinding job in that midfield quite solidly now for almost a year. But for this season, he has upped his game and its becoming more and more obvious that even blind fanboys will soon have to admit that he is looking good.
