Eberechi Eze: Eze On The Eye

This is a "wait and see" scenario.

Eze hasn't had a run of games at LW yet. Assuming people are correct and that he is first choice, he could be good out there. Tzolis has had one good match and one bad match so no idea where his level really is until we see him for at least 10 matches, so maybe Eze is first choice.

Eze isn't a speed merchant so he would play more like Trossard. It seems like he has a lot of the qualities that Trossard has, like ball striking and similar passing skills. He also can't dribble past people, which Trossard really didn't do but Martinelli did all the time. The real issue, though, is how much he effort he puts into defense.

If he doesn't defend, Arteta won't play him and it will be Eze's fault. Given how hard everyone else defends, you would guess he would get with the program but who knows.

I think when we signed him last summer he was brought in with the idea to play a lot on the LW. His debut was on the left as well but we never were able to get Ødegaard fit so he had to move to 10 and then one of the hideous twins had to play.

I think he could be really good on the wing, we just need some some consistency playing him there.

Thought he was very good Monday night on the LW, the Cash thing from last season was overplayed.

We have enough defensive minded players behind him and a solid back four and GK to be obsessing about tracking back, he knows the system and way Arteta works better now a year on.

Last season everyone remembers the great goals he scored, what about the assist 1st time from the left side to Gyokeres against Forest, type of cross/pass we have been lacking too often.

i thought he could be a LW for us but Arteta didn’t and he had multiple chances to play him there along with Ødegaard in the 10 and hardly did. Now, could he have been doing kinda what he was doing with MLS? Just kinda keeping him sidelined while coaching him up to play on that side? Potentially. But if he’s supposed to be the LW now, the fans have no reason to have confidence in that. He could be very good there with some tweaks and a general mentality shift tbh.

Is he as quick as Trossard at the very least? I imagine he must be but sometimes he looks a bit flat footed and heavy when running with the ball.

Absolutely love Eze, I can't think of a player who plays with more natural flair than him. He's smooth and effortless. In many ways similar to Özil, Zidane, bertabov.

I personally think the left is ideal for him. It protects him from being disposed in dangerous situations and at the same time gives him the opportunity to operate in areas where he shines.

He is as hard to dispossess in the middle as Saka and Ødegaard, if not more. It's far from being one of his weaknesses. On the other hand, he lacks the dynamism to play on the left at a club of our level. No other top club plays a player like him on the wing anymore.

I like Eze and thought he had a fairly good sub appearance but his situational awareness is really poor at times.

Like he'll take the exact same risk with the ball in his own defensive third when we're defending a 1-0 lead as he would in the attacking third.

Yes, i want him to make this role just like Pires did. not the fastest but amazing player and gifted in the final third.

That was always the problem with a big money move for Rogers in my mind - like we only just signed Eze last year and they're not *that* different style or ability wise. Yes, Rogers is more direct, more physical but they've both got insane long range bangers in the locker; both inconsistent at times and Eze is an insane technician at his best. Some of his dribbles and feints are crazy good.

I think Rogers would have been a slight upgrade but debatable if it's worth the money we would have paid. Look at their output - Rogers got a goal every 320 minutes last season, not exactly game changing. Eze actually beat that with a goal every 270 minutes. Give him some proper time on the LW rotating with Tzolis- we'll see if he's good enough. Really hope he can raise his level because it's on him now to show it.

Very interesting to read the split opinions on Eze as LW particularly.
Has to do a lot with optimistic and pessimistic mindset as the jury is still out but it's clear that Trossard and Martinelli were ahead of Eze last season. Eze is a playmaker, to play him at LW is something that Wenger would have done, remembering Rosicky, Hleb and Santi. A player that will help to unlock tight defenses, such as Villas, a player that can create something and surely gets better with time in a team, as the chemistry evolves and quantities of options become available in the mind, whereas on the other hand Tzolis is more direct and particularly Martinelli was more of a simple LW that needs to perfect certain qualities, timing of runs and finishes to be at his most useful.

He needed a bit of time last season to get up to speed at the 10 position, but I'd argue he got there in the end

Now he's being asked to take on a new role that is completely different, I think he'll need time again to adjust tactically

But I do think he will get there

The other thing he needs to do is improve his stamina as some of his carelessness with the ball felt like taking shortcuts when physically tired

Big opportunity for him, hope he seizes it, he should take a look at what his mate Olise has done and try to emulate that.

I’ve always said, this guy is the definition of an X factor. Can literally create something out of nothing. We just need him to mentally shape up, really go for it, and for Mikel to coach him up to where that confidence is just oozing out of him. Come on lads let’s ****ing get it now

No idea on Rodgers goal distribution but these goal every x minutes stats can be misleading. Eze didnt actually get a goal every 270 minutes since half most of his goals were against 1 team in 2 matches. That massively changes things
