Do you think ESR could do what KdB does? If he can then he surely could play the LCM position. Lots of matches we see at City they rotate both CMs a lot, like Liverpool does as well. Some matches you see Bernardo there with De Bruyne and sometimes you see Gundogan over there with one of the other two. So it would be very reasonable to have ESR, Ødegaard, Viera and Xhaka/Tielmans rotating there. But as I said it depends if ESR can revamp his game to be able to add more physic, carry the ball with speed and put that key pass ala KdB. So for being capable of that a better positioning and physical presence is key.
I think these comparisons between ESR and KDB has always been incorrect. KDB is a very unique player who is basically very good or world class in every aspect of his game: physicality, speed, vision, ball striking, ball carrying, goal scoring, passing etc.

ESR is more of a specialist player than an all rounder. He is more towards players like Ramsey or Rosicky or Nasri who can do 2 things very well. Not saying he is stylistically like them just saying these are similarly players who have around 2 big strengths rather than being ‘complete’ players.

We just need those 2 things (ball carrying and scoring goals) to be sharpened and then complimented by some maturity in physicality and the defensive basics. It will let him become a successful player in the middle because right now he doesn’t have the basics to play there as he’s still young and learning. I disagree with Rom that he needs to be a top passer for that role, in a 433 it is ok to add a different dimension to your other attacking mid (Ødegaard and Vieira who are vision players and playmakers).

But nasri and Ramsey were a level above esr in the talent department. Those guys were serious talents while esr is just a good talent

ESR has no vision or final ball, he's a dribbler. Reminds me of Rosicky a bit. I think Vieira will be our version of KDB.

ESR will have a lot of work to do in order to fight for his spot - no doubt about that !

However, it's quite clear for me that he's so special and talented that he has all that is needed to outperform anyone on his day. Just depends how he adapts to that kind of competition.

I have rarely seen such a dangerous AM - if he matures along with it, he's going to be freakin massive. So I definitely see him in the centre, that is.
Then why we bought Vieira? Seems like pretty similar to what we have in ESR age/position/talent. I don't know enough about Vieira, but he must be a super talent that we bought him. In the stats ESR wins. So much money.

The ESR slander that is occcuring in this thread is disgraceful. The guy literally turned around the team when he is was first introduced.

He just needs to grow into his body. His game will be heavily based on his conditioning and physicality.

He also has a banging shot that he hasn't even displayed yet.

Thank you!

What does grow into his body actually mean?

Man admitted he eats junk food, that's a deadly sin in Arsenalmania

Just look at your slander disguised as encouragement, grow into his body, heavy game.

If it weren’t for ESR we would still have Willian on £200k a week stinking up the place. I know ESR struggled in the second half of the season, but I’m convinced some people want to see him fail just so they can say they were right.

I like Smith-Rowe but as I said somewhere else he does look like the odd man out in the potential front 6 of Jesus, Raphina, Saka, Martinelli and Nketiah who all have intense work rate and pressing.

Personally I don't mind having some variety but I get the impression that Mikel is trying to make a squad that is fully interchangeable where a player goes out and his replacement comes in and does the same job.

Maybe he will get used more in one of the 8 roles again. You would think with his ball carrying ability, good timing arriving in the box and finishing ability that is the role that seems best suits his skill set even if he hasn't shown it yet.

...can see this being Raphinha, after we sign Gnabry this summer.

Wasn’t it 40M?

Also this isn’t true the club clearly went for Suarez over Higuain and if FSG had actually honoured the contract we’d have got our man.

It’s mad more isn’t made about how Liverpool just essentially breached a contract because it didn’t suit them.

Higuain is very a good player, but glad we got Özil over him... he's about the same level as Giroud, Suarez would have been the one though.

Yeah, was such a weird situation...why did we bid just that extra pound though

I can only think he's talking fee+wages, which does add up

Legally we were in the right.

I guess if a club dares you to sue them there’s not much you can do

Nah Higuain's a level above Giroud. We didn't need Özil because we had Santi, Higuain would of put us up a level

Dickie Law and Ivan Gazidis back then, no wonder we got bullied by Liverpool.

That **** wouldn't have happened on Edu's and especially Vinai's watch!

Release clauses arent that normal in the UK, so maybe the legal precedent wasnt here to contest Liverpool. I do think that release clauses in general should be more standardised througout UEFA countries.

I know a lot of fans dont like release clauses, but I do think they should be required in contracts. Just put some fantasy number there if the club is genuinely worried about players leaving. Besides, if the player doesnt want to leave, it is a non-issue.

When you are forcing players to stay you just generate bad vibes anyway, and its much better to get a good payout imo.
