ARTIST OF THE WEEK
It has been almost two decades since the debut album of Egyptian phenomenon Amr Diab. A superstar of epic proportions in the Arab world, his prolific recording career took off in the mid 80's and throughout the 90's set the standard for Arabic sales records. Purportedly the first Arab artist to make a music video, Diab also holds the record for best selling album ever by an Arabic artist, and has attained worldwide success with his European dance floor hits.

Beginning his study of Arabic music, Diab moved to Cairo in 1982 and enrolled in college, releasing his very first album, "Ya Tareek", only a few years later in 1986. His second album wasn't far behind in the same year, and "Khalseen", the album that established him as an up and coming star, was released in 1987.

From then on he has released albums on an almost annual basis, as well as dividing his time between the music and film worlds, acting in an assortment of hit movies.

In 1990 Diab represented Egypt at the 5th Tournament of African Sports and sang in Arabic, English and French during a concert televised via satellite throughout the world. Following this breakthrough performance, "Matkhafeesh" was released and the accompanying video, apparently the first to be made by an Arabic artist, enlisted Diab in the history books.

By 1993 Diab had become such a star he not only released a hit album, "Ya Omrena", but also starred in a film opposite movie legend Omar Sharif. Moving back into music, and two albums later, Diab finally achieved crossover success with the album "Nour El Ain" in 1996. It was a huge hit both in the Middle East and internationally, and become the best selling album ever released by an Arabic artist.

The following year "Habibi" - the remix album was released, and only further extended his international following by becoming a wildly popular dance floor filler throughout Europe. This led in 1998 to Diab being honoured at Monaco's World Music Awards as the "World's Best Selling Middle Eastern Artist".

As the new millennium dawned the first of Diab's best of collections hit shelves in 1999, and the same year saw him tour North America and receive a warm welcome from fans from the other side of the world.

Best-seller, "Tamally Maak" was released in 2000, "Aktar Wahed" hit shelves in 2001, and in 2002 Diab won his second World Music Award, and also performed at the prestigious European event.

Most recently in 2004 Diab released "Leily Nahary", and also featured in the worldwide gladiator-themed Pepsi commercial starring Britney Spears, Beyonce and Pink. And now, having achieved phenomenal success in the Middle East, Diab is set to showcase his live show in Europe, by performing for the first time in London, on the 18th November at Hammersmith Apollo.

So to celebrate his London debut, and in recognition of his fantastic success in not only the Middle East, but also across Europe, we at MTV Europe think it is time we shone the spotlight on this Egyptian superstar by making him our Artist of the Week.

When I arrived, an Arsenal share was worth £800; it subsequently rose continuously in value and by the time I left it stood at £17,000.
