Ethan Nwaneri: Nwan Of Nwan

The irony is by not playing Nwaneri, Arteta has done the opposite of protecting Nwaneri. The clamour for him to play has gone up tenfold because fans recognise we have no alternative to Ødegaard. If our skipper comes back and we still struggle to create then fans will continue to cry for Nwaneri, and build him up to be our saviour.

Arteta should have played Nwaneri sooner. If he's not at the level, its okay because its early in the season and points lost isn't as bad as it is in May. I'd rather find out if Ethan is at the level now than wait in April, wouldn't you?
Agreed. However, we did get through some difficult fixtures against villa, Sp**s, city, psg, liverpool without Ødegaard or mwaneri. Maybe arteta trusted his experienced players to keep perform but as we've come to realise the football wasn't sustainable. We've been somewhat unlucky in that we've conceded goals without giving up too many chances but thats what happens when you dont score at the other end...you get punished. We're finding it hard to create because we're giving the opposition the chance to get into a defensive rhythm by being predictable and not taking risks

Yeah. We can't draw conclusions just yet. I admittedly don't have a good feeling but we need to see what he's like when he has the momentum.

That, and I would like to see how he plays with a fit Ødegaard. This time last year I thought Havertz was quite literally a 'Make A Wish' recipient.

It'll probably be similar to Xhaka at LCM with either one of Rice/#5 at the base with Ødegaard other side. If it works (hopefully it does), cool. I'd still much rather someone a bit more technical there. I'm sure we could find someone who can pass and dribble without losing all their doo-ells.

Also more agility, tired of plodders.

I think we should afford Merino some patience given he played all the way through to the Euro final and had no pre-season due to the shoulder injury.

Merino is 28 years old, like Wenger complains about how you need to pay for the education of youngster with points yet is it fair to pay for the education of old players too with points? Old players who do not play with more maturity and reliability than youngsters?

Apparently we should afford Merino some patience yet Nwaneri must be perfect before he can get more minutes.

That's not the argument being made (at least by me)

And my argument is that it is hard to justify giving Merino "more patience" if he doesn't actually look more ready and reliable than Nwaneri.

Fair but they're not really competing for the same position imo, it's more Trossard taking minutes that could be allocated to Nwaneri

I think he's a forward, namely a second striker. I wonder what he could offer us playing on the left wing. It would be awkward for him at first but his angle bias isn’t as bad as Ødegaard’s. What do you think @MutableEarth? Our very own Hale End Griezmann.

Yeah he's very forward-like. He plays nominally in midfield because that's where most 10s play nowadays if they're not tall or powerful enough to play #9. Advanced 8 works mostly for him.

I don't really like him at LW if I'm honest. Angle bias aside, the last thing I want Nwaneri doing is having to hold width most of the game. If anything, a better use of him would be as an auxiliary left 8 option because at the very least he'll be around the central areas and in the box because that's where I'd want him.

I hope we see this because it would be a real shame if he only ever plays when Ødegaard isn't on the field.

Nwaneri doesn't have to hold the width. I'd like him to come infield the same way Trossard does when he'd deployed on the left wing. Creativity is a must from the left side.
