Ethan Nwaneri: Nwaneri In The Coal Mine

At youth tournaments coaches usually stick with the older players because it's "their turn", so to speak.
Yeah, Carsley's normally good but this has been an uncharacteristically poor tournament. His disappointing use of #9s and distribution of attacking talent is far more egregious than Nwaneri not playing as much, I didn't expect him to play too many minutes ahead of guys like Elliot and co, they've all played much more football at a higher level than Nwaneri. That said, I'd have liked to see Nwaneri platformed better but Carsley's struggled to platform most of their attacking players. He's played both Nwaneri and Hutchinson on the left at points this tournament and they're clearly not at their best there. Gittens was a big miss this tournament as he's been the main LW.

Nwaneri came on in the last bit of the game vs Spain upfront and the couple touches he got were very good, laid on a good chance for Norton-Cuffy (remember him?). Been a clunky tournament overall for England, and a bit of a hit-and-miss from Carsley and not just with Nwaneri IMO, that's not even the main one,

Shamelessly stolen from Reddit:

[James McNicholas] While Arsenal are linked with a host of attackers, contract talks w/ 18yo Ethan Nwaneri are at a delicate stage. EN wants to stay - but no agreement yet & strong interest from PL/Europe. A key situation for #AFC to address.

  • Delay on an extension partially due to timing and also U21 Euros. Arsenal were not legally allowed to even offer an extension before his 18th birthday in March
  • Nwaneri wants to stay
  • Arsenal consider his contract an issue that needs to be addressed swiftly. Nwaneri can speak to foreign clubs from January 2026
  • Arsenal do not want to sell even though it would benefit them PSR wise but they also recognise they cannot let him leave as a free agent
  • Sources close to the deal are optimistic about an extension but, until signed, concerns will still linger
  • Madueke a strong contender to be signed. Arsenal attracted to his PL experience and ability to play both LW and RW
  • Gordon and Rodrygo also in the mix but remains to be seen if a sale is needed for one of these
  • Martinelli admired by Bayern but there has been no approach from the German side
  • Martinelli is happy in London and his focus is on winning trophies at Arsenal
  • Morgan Gibbs White an alternative target to Eze and Rogers
  • Arsenal exploring a deal for Eze may be a contingency plan in case things don’t go to plan with Nwaneri

Article: Ethan Nwaneri’s Arsenal contract situation – what we’re hearing

I fear all of this Eze/Madueke talk will make Ethan concerned about his playing time in 25-26. Push him too far back in the hierarchy and there is a chance he might seek his fortune elsewhere. Hopefully I am not being alarmist by pointing this out.

Is it just me that feels like we’re overreacting to that article?

Ethan wants to stay, we want him to stay, we couldn’t negotiate during the u21 WC, now we begin in earnest.

Berta being Berta he’s talking to 32 other players just because but if you ignore that then it’s all pretty calm no?

He has to lock in to rotate with Ødegaard.
And nerves won't be calm till we see him sign the extension.
And he will pretty much want near about MLS salary.

All I am getting from that article is that it was inconvenient to negotiate with Ethan until he was 18 and came back from the Euro U21.

This article was a puff piece to get more clicks.
He’s turned 18 in march. The euros was in June. All I got from that is he has entered his last 12 months and can talk to foreign clubs. If you are his agent you see who arsenal brings in and where he fits

i'm honstly tired of gunnerblog and his clickbait negative headline. reading his article it say all the signs leading to renwal so why he always trying to make it sound negative in his headline.
The last time we had contract negotiations with Nwaneri, it didn't go swimmingly. We have priors with his reps, and Arteta needed to get involved to convince him to stay. The Madueke news must have been a tough pill to swallow.

it could be but the club view him important piece i still don't understand this madueke interest but i really expect Ethan to sign likely just his agents trying to get paid because Ethan is super talent and want to take advantage of it.

He’s probably got offers from every decent club in Europe making him promises. It’s an interesting situation.

We’re just gonna have to pay him what he wants. The only card we hold is that he wants to stay. Ethan holds all the other cards (we want him to stay, he has 12 months on his contract, he is in demand).

This is one you can’t win Berta. Just fold please. No, do not ask the dealer for the Madueke card. Just don’t.

Honestly though I’m pretty relaxed. These things take time - look at how long MLS discussions took. It’s only been what a week since the Euros ended?

Don’t think he’s going anywhere but he needs to nail down a position and that might potentially be his undoing. Dowman is also coming which complicates things.

Arsenal Quotes

When Patrick Vieira came over from AC Milan, he didn’t know a word of English. We gave him accommodation, phone, car and an English teacher. I talked to Patrick in fluent French and before a game I asked in French, can you speak a bit of English to me? Patrick nodded and replied: Tottenham are shit!
