Ethan Nwaneri: Nwaneri In The Coal Mine

Trilly

I thought he was easily the best of the MF bunch. This isn't really a game to judge individuals anyways.

The key takeaway for me thus far this season based on what I've seen is that Ethan is ready to play with the big boys and Ødegaard should be on notice.
That’s the best thing about his development for me. The fact he’s clearly part of the group that’s good enough to be in the first XI despite his age.

He’s way, way ahead of schedule and in terms of playing time this is still his debut season if you think about it yet his performances are already getting assessed in comparison to an experienced top level pro like Ødegaard.

This is pure waffle lol

Of course it's waffle. He scored nine goals in his first season playing predominantly on the wings. He likely sees himself as a midfielder and only as a midfielder. It might hurt his gametime, but if he backs himself to excel in midfield, then I'm all for it. Young players should generalise when they are young and specialise when they're older, but sometimes a player finds their role in the team within the first or second season playing professionally.

Good to see him get 20 mins yesterday, always a player brave on the ball commits and draws opponents.

If Ødegaard is out for a period of time he will get more game time, cameo performances you can almost try and force things. Really hope he gets a few starts next couple of months regardless of Ødegaard fitness.

He had a good cameo yesterday. Loved how direct he was playing on the left and showing a good burst. Arteta please trust him now that Ødegaard is injured.

He has played well with every appearance this season. I'd argue he's probably the fringe player most deserving of more minutes.
Feel he has significantly raised his floor. Doing the basics consistently with his usual flashes of brilliance. Can’t wait to see more of him

I can't help but feel he's nailing himself down to that central role a year or so too early.

Wenger would have had him out on the wing for another 12 to 18 months or so.

Yeah why nail your colours to the mast for a specific position? He should just be wanting to get on the pitch.

I don't think he's been particularly advised well in this scenario. I'm not sure why he absolutely has to play centrally at the age of 18 yo. He's curtailing the available minutes on offer. At this age he should be playing all across the front line to gain experience.

I think his final frontier is defending tbh. Duels are fine but needs to position better. The OOP stuff is probably the only thing keeping Arteta from starting him more - rightly or wrongly.

Despite Ethan playing a decent amount of minutes thus far this season I think he's deserved more than what he's got. Funnily enough, I think Ethan would have been more effective than Eze vs Fulham in retrospect.

It's been a bit rough for him as far as minute goes.

At the same, with our injuries, he should be featuring more, but a lot of the games he'd be used are ones where you wouldn't sub Saka or you'd rather bring a guy like Merino on for safety (or the odd goal).

Feel he'd actually feature more with everyone who's ahead of him fit by the sheer nature of - at least on paper - games becoming easier and us getting far enough ahead where you bring him on without worrying all that much.

eze hasn’t been affecting games consistently enough. So, do we bring Ethan in for a game and stick ebs on the left? Or do we stick with trying to get ebs acclimatised to the Arsenal attacking mf position?

Remember I told you guys he doesn’t have long term future here. It starts to get more obvious now

Who cares? He decided to stay and we need to win. You were saying the exact same thing about Saliba as well.

If he's good enough, he earns his position. Otherwise, he'll be sold with a pure profit

Kind of a bit of Foden (derogatory) about him currently. Impressive final actions but sketchy as an actual playmaker. No reason to be worried by it at 18 though.
