Fabio Vieira: The Portuguese Project

People who argued he had no standout attributes and called him trash are nowhere to be found in this thread, I see.

Guy's the most incisive passer on the team, even better than Ødegaard who is quite good himself. He's probably the best crosser also. You clearly don't get 15 assists for Porto without being good.

Had a good game, clearly showed he can hang with physical teams. His shooting was off.

I think he is also one of the best shooters of the team.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I vaguely remembered Vieira played on the RW or rare occasion, Ode position and even more rarely, LCM? when he signed for us.

He played RW for the U23's which Arteta, Edu and I think Mertesacker watched. Played once or twice in a cup comp I think but can't really remember for sure beyond his U23 match shortly after he joined.

He has played RW and in Ode's position but particularly in Europe where he got most of his game time, he was playing instead of Xhaka. I think the goal was always that he could be cover for Ødegaard in case of injury but also grow into being able to start alongside him with the 6 sitting behind.

This is why I compared him to Havertz as a project, you see Havertz has played 2 different positions but it's clear which one Arteta hopes he can grow into.

This is a good point. Outside of Vieira and probably Ødegaard we have a lot of inconsistent/scruffy ball strikers. Lost a very good one in Xhaka too.
I think the best shooters are Trossard, Saka, Martinelli, Ødegaard and Vieira.

Xhaka was quite slow to shoot so wasn't so effective in EPL, but otherwise he was good.

Mikel is a typical politician and with this type it doesn’t matter what they say it matters what they do. There is no way he was going to give Vieira who was in utterly rotten form more game time last season when we were chasing the title. It’s one of the reasons why i never bother listening to his press conferences unless they are posted here.

Partey seldom shoot thou. But if he did shoot on goal, it is always beautiful done.
I personally vouched him being a good shooter when he in his first years put all those shots to the Moon, and it became a meme here and elsewhere. If you remember?

He has in recent times got his act together there and showed he can shoot, like he did at Atletico.

But I can't rate him as highly as a shooter as the others because he hasn't been consistent for Arsenal in it.

I actually think he's comfortably better than Rice as a midfielder, but his shooting is definitely bullshit.

He largely cut it out last season after he finally got his Tottenham screamer, but his first 2 seasons were a joke in this department.

I said he was playing trash outside of his key passing and shooting but I've given him credit for his performances so far this season. He looks like a changed man. He really was very bad the first half of 2023 though.
My problems were that he looked slow and weak, he'd get dispossesed very easily under any sort of pressure and that he was playing way too safe and borderline hiding from the ball at times. So far he has looked vastly better at all of those negatives. He dares to take a few more touches when needed, doesn't mess up basic passes, and generally looks more comfortable with the pace of the game. Well done to him. He was immense against fulham obviously and I thought he was solid last game as well. If he keeps playing like this then i'll happily say I was wrong allthough it's a bit early to say that as well.

Probably helps his case as well that havertz barely looks like a footballer in that lcm role which makes him look even better in comparison.

His movement seems to have gone up a gear, was one of my biggest gripes with him. He was taking up the right sort of positions and not just hanging around the box looking to get a shot off.

Caveat here is that he didn’t have much defending to do and tracking runners etc which is something he’s not been good at historically.

But overall he’s plastered egg all over my face. Good on him 👏

What I like about him is that he’s taking brave decisions on the ball. Couldn’t give a **** if he loses it trying, but the intent is what you want to see from that position.

Last year was definitely a bedding in period for him with some ups and downright bad downs. He looks like a player now coached to play Arteta’s system and knows what he has to do in and out of possession.

Let’s hope he keeps up this rate of improvement
