MARSEILLE PLEASED AT FEDERATION BACKING OVER FLAMINI
By PA International staff
Marseille president Christophe Bouchet has thanked the French football
federation (FFF) for refusing to deliver a letter of release for Arsenal
midfielder Mathieu Flamini.
The 20-year-old has been in conflict with the Mediterranean giants since
announcing in July that he was joining the Gunners instead of signing a
professional deal with OM.
Bouchet and coach Jose Anigo immediately tried to block Flamini's departure to
England and lodged a complaint with the LFP, the body that runs the professional
game in France, who refused to authorise the move.
The request was then sent to the FFF who gave their backing to Marseille,
while Bouchet also received support from the UCPF, the national union for
professional football clubs, as well fellow Ligue 1 outfits Auxerre, Saint
Etienne, Le Havre and Metz.
French clubs are renowned for their academies which produce players of
outstanding quality who are then often picked up by foreign clubs for knockdown
fees before signing professional terms.
"The FFF took a courageous decision," Bouchet said on
www.olympiquedemarseille.com.
"They assured us they would hold on and they did, it is good to feel
supported."
His request, however, did not prevent Flamini from making his debut for Arsène
Wenger's side at the weekend after receiving the go-ahead from the English FA,
whose decision was also authorised by FIFA.
And Bouchet was unable to hide his anger at the turn of events.
"The training system is very expensive and is about to fall into debt,
without the FFF it certainly would," Bouchet continued.
"FIFA behave as if they had the right to deregulate everything. Just like the
clubs, the players should not have the right to do what they want."
Bouchet also admitted being disappointed by Arsenal's actions, insisting they
are prepared to take the case as far as possible.
"I had always praised the loyalty of Arsenal but their attitude is
unacceptable," he added.
"We are now getting ready for a long judicial and administrative marathon."
The case will now be submitted to the Court of Arbitration for Sport which is
the highest legal authority in world sport.
I hope this doesn't mean Flamini is gonna be: a) sent back to Marseille or b) so unsettled by it he plays crap.
