For the start of the new season, Arsenal Mania has relaunched the news side of the site. All articles are written by genuine Arsenal fans with no hidden agenda. You can visit the site via the menu at the top of the forum pages or go direct to our homepage

Additionally, Arsenal Mania is now sending all its registered members a bi-weekly Briefing Bulletin containing a digest of news and views from both parts of the site. Some of you may have already received the first edition and those that haven't should do so before the big kick off against United. If you are a guest visitor to this forum then if you join as a member, you will automatically receive the Bulletin.

Gabriel Martinelli: Dogback

Arsenal fans really used to say he had a higher ceiling than Saka. For some reason people always discredit Bukayo, Martinelli has never been on that level.

not really surprising, even during his breakout season I called out the flaws in his game and predicted they’d catch up to him.

It’s now 17 games without productivity and some of the harshest critics of other forwards we’ve had stay making excuses. They’ll then come out of the woodwork when he has one good game out of ten, as if that changes the bigger picture.

Even in his ‘good’ games there’s still endless discourse about key errors he makes and of course no productivity.

Rodrygo doesn’t have anywhere near the defensive skills Martinelli has
I think it’s fair to say that Mikel is a pretty good football manager now. If you give him more upfront than you do from tracking back then he’ll obviously adjust your defensive workload.

Nelli’s replacement (if Mikel wants one) doesn’t need to be a defensive monster, people just draw attention to that as it’s a standout attribute of his.

Mikel is top class defensive manager. But he is not great at improving attacking players. His way of attack is too rigid. Rodrygo is not someone who is gonna go up and down the wings defending as intensive. I just think he will wear him down which will effect his attacking game

Yet despite that he still carried the biggest threat and had our two best open play chances.

I would like to see Sterling get given the LW spot.

Our best player Ode is a work horse in both ends.
Saka also works his socks off every game

Saka improves his productivity every season and Arteta gets no credit for that, but gets criticized for Martinelli's not scoring??

Yeah, so maybe the manager instils that workrate into the players and it’s not a requirement when buying them?

Outside of elite athletes like Kante and Rice who play ‘2 player in one’ roles it’s not that difficult to build up the fitness levels required to play our game.

He's going to start at LW on Sunday - despite his cold form in terms of G/A, he still is amazing OOP and is a threat on transition.
He won't ever score/get a goal contribution/assist at club. Would sell in January. He is done, It happens.

He lost the ability to beat his man 1v1 consistently

In my opinion this was the key attribute that set him apart as he was breaking out

No fear, just skinning the fullback over and over

Not sure what happened

I wouldn't put this on the manager. Martinelli has been given a lot of gametime. He didn't have a good season last year, and the start so far has not been too promising. The manager has put a lot of trust in him, in recent times, that has not necessarily been repaid. Sterling might provide some competition, but we shall see. I still think this is a position where we could improve, hopefully from Martinelli finding back to form.

It is a given that you will be asked to track back, that is not the issue here.

Forum politics aside, no matter how much bail or favouritism you want to show the kid he’s not surviving another season like this. Not under Mik.

Martinelli is too good to just jettison like an Eddie or Reiss. I would be fine with getting a class LW with Martinelli being resigned to a bench option. Guy is only 24 yo.
