Gabriel Martinelli: Flash of Fire at the Burnedabeu

Yeah we shouldn't be fooled by the occasional game where he roasts a fullback anymore. He has had 2 seasons to kick on, he didn't.

Still he made some poor decisions when he beat his man. Also there's never any danger of him cutting inside and putting it in the far corner

But was this not from this same "danger" position Ødegaard shone last season, ghosting in and hitting those cutbacks first time? This season he just keeps hitting them without conviction. Even in this same game he skyed one he was given.

I think Ode's poor form has hurt us almost as Martinelli's.

Ødegaard’s poor form has hurt us way more than Martinelli. Ødegaard’s drop off is way larger and he’s supposed to influence the middle of the pitch.

kind of agree with this. throughout last season where Martinelli's game being ineffective was normalized, he still scored against City and Liverpool through sheer persistence.

Should have cut inside and shot in the first half instead of going down the line. But there's probably not a single left sided winger who has a better workrate in football right now. That's why Arteta trusts him so much.

About AM drooling over mediocre players? 😀
Tbh I haven’t watched Nico enough to go all in on Nico > Nelli but from the little I’ve seen I don’t think it’s close.

Nelli does this thing where he can kind of pretend to have a good game by going down the outside and creating an illusion of having his fullback on toast.

Really and truly the fullback is allowing him to go on the outside and his delivery when he does is mixed at best.

Valverde showed him outside (he’s not even a fullback) and he took it every single time. Not a problem in this game but you need your winger to be able to cut in effectively because he’s too predictable atm.

This whole "they let him go outside" is crazy too, like I understand your point and it's valid, actually you are 100% right but if Nico did that you'd hear AM say he's the best ever.
Martinelli is insanely underrated, the work ethic and constant headache he gives to the RB is immense. We have a true striker and he will have more assists.

Also don't forget he's playing under Arteta, he doesn't give any freedom like Nico gets.

I will give up my account if Nico comes here and outperforms him.

I've been sick of this guy for quite some time now, but hats off. Last couple of games he's been excellent. Not many people can keep up with Valverde, but Martinelli was giving him nightmares in attack as well as tracking back with him all game.

I feel for him at times he gets very isolated out on the left at times, with MLS inverting he gets no overlaps or anything and is expected to put in a massive shift defensively

Still I thought he was excellent yesterday. Had Valverde on toast and looked dangerous everytime he got the ball.

Fair enough, I don’t disagree with any of that!
