Gabriel Martinelli: Flash of Fire at the Burnedabeu

This is why you have to be worried about Ødegaard.

Some of these players have one, two, maybe even three good seasons and then just fall off and never quite reach those heights.

You wonder if we've focused more on them being running machines rather than developing the very promising skills they had. Not just us but maybe football in general guilty of that.

Mental for me to be going on about a handful of Europa/Carling Cup games years ago but Gabi looked so lethal back then. I still rate him but I'm never confident he's going to take a chance nowadays.

This is why I worry for Nwaneri. Technically and creativity both Martinelli and Ødegaard has gone backwards. Both were exciting at one point. Now they do the same thing over and over in pretty much same spot of the pitch. You have to look at the coaching, I mean our star coach is set piece guy ffs

Yeah we'll see. I think/hope Nwaneri will be alright because, like Saka, he has the belief and and confidence to take people on for fun, not scared to have pop at goal as well. I think he follows along the lines of Saka and MLS' development.

it’s been very eye opening looking at the standard of wingers playing in Europe, and I’m not even necessarily talking about the best of the best. The standard of wing play in the PL is at an all time low imo and I think Martinelli was able to benefit from that. Fair play to him for extracting close to 200kpw from the club, not sure how he’s pulled that off because I don’t even know where he ranks in wingers in Europe.

I do know that statistically it’s not great.

The stats align quite well with the eye test imo. Compared to most wingers he’s eating good, he gets lots of touches in the penalty box, receives a lot of forward passes and gets a healthy amount of xG.

We also see that what he’s doing with the service is average at best. Average goalscoring and chance creation while being really bad when it comes to passing and creation his own shots.
Martinelli earned his contract and salary on the back of the 22/23 campaign, and no one can deny he was one of our best players and one of the best young attackers in world football that season. It's unfortunate that he's not improved or even regressed since.

Someone really did an @ me when he had a good game a few weeks ago, somehow proving that his is a quality player.

He wouldn't start for Wrexham. Tragic. Nice trick though, flicking the ball between his feet like a 6 year old.

Yeah I wonder how good your favourite left winger would be under Arteta. You are in for a surprise maat.

Who would that be, Williams?

I never said he was my favourite winger. Didn't see enough of him to argue how good he is or isn't. I actually think his numbers aren't great.

I just want someone better than Martinelli. He's crap.

Just anyone. They will be having Arteta tax when playing under his system, it's not easy.

In his defence first half he put some balls into the box. The layoff for rice shot was very good. A top CF and more runners into the box and no doubt his contributions improve. In front of goal he has to become lethal.

...and then He woke up sweating !!!
I know where I’m at with him.

He’s a good option in the big games where we are under the cosh, where we have to defend and where he can stretch the opposition.

In virtually every other scenario (80% of games), he shouldn’t be anywhere near the first 11.

Keep him around but he’s essentially the Brazilian Dirk Kuyt.

Meh he is a goal away against PSG to get back in peoples good books. This is another Theo Walcott where we went back and front for years if he was good enough. He always had a moment to extend the debate. We have 3 big games against Newcastle m, Liverpool and PSG and an important goal in any of them we back to square one

Nah man this has been going on for too long. He's young and young players have up and downs, but this is different. Started for years in a row and it's time to replace.

That little "skill" he does where he hits the ball quickly between both feet as he dribbles, before either running it out of play or passing it backwards...

Yeah that needs to fu3k off alongside the North London Forever song and die in a ditch somewhere soon!
