Gabriel Martinelli: Flash of Fire at the Burnedabeu

Makes me wonder why we never used him as a striker. Too much of a in instincts player to play the "Arteta winger" role.

Emery who notably works well with strikers put him in CF position when giving him a debut, and I remember him being good with both feet, finishing, movement, and even headers.

I agree with the sentiment that he would be better placed at CF. He made it work but ultimately his most interesting trait ever here was his instincts in the box when he first joined. Almost like a bit of a poacher.

We don’t do it but he should be getting minutes there. Mad we didn’t try it during this CF injury crisis. Opted for Trossard instead.

well, he didn't get minutes there when all strikers were out. Says clearly was Arteta thinks about him as striker. Even Trossard and Merino were preferred there

He can’t hold up or link play. He would be a disaster at striker. AM has weirder fetishes than 4chan.

I think this is pure copium ngl.

There are a lot of excuses made for Gabi: “no Xhaka”, “He needs an overlapping fullback”, “he’s a Cf”.

He struggles technically on the wing, I don’t think putting him in an even more congested area of the pitch will solve much.

He’s just a pacey workhorse winger that does a job in certain games. Brazilian Dirk Kuyt.

That’s what we are seeing right now. Where things have taken him in this system. Youre talking about 2025 Martinelli I’m talking about 2020/21 Martinelli.

But when he first joined, the reason he was my favourite player was he was showing real box instinct, sniffing out goals, scoring headers.

This in particular. Rightly or wrongly we've went away from that in his development since then.

Maybe he would've all turned out as unfulfilled promise anyway but their was definitely something there back then. Looked lethal then, could anyone argue that now?

Should really get a run in at nr 9 the last 2 games

Strikers finish that. Liked the brief signs we saw from him through the middle second half. Was getting into some really threatening positions in the box, asking for balls to be played through and even linked play.

Would be keen to see it again but if not encouraging if Gyokeres comes in as he could definitely give us that.

I don't understand why Arteta doesn't utilise Martinelli's heading more often. He was proficient at headers in his early days, but using him as a touchline winger completely negates this skill. I doubt he even gets in the box with Crapvertz leading the line because the German doesn't like to rotate out wide, unlike Jesus or Trossard.

Remember he scored an absolute worldy header in the league cup in one of his first games. We’ve not really seen it since then.

Arsenal Quotes

Robert Pirès was a fabulous player, world-class, and for a few years, before his injury, he was unquestionably the best left-midfielder in the world by far. He had incredible technique, he was smart, a finisher. He was a killer with a smile, the gentlest man in the world who suddenly drive the ball exactly where it was needed.
