Gabriel Martinelli: Got That Dog In Him

Don't get me wrong, Martinelli's form is poor and he's in line for getting replaced in a coming transfer window. Looking at the weapons at our disposal though I'm of the opinion we still need him and his attributes- the likes of Havertz and Trossard aren't beating people for pace often and Saka isn't one to run in behind that much himself. Sometimes it's about balance and that's what Martinelli brings as a complementary piece, I think our ceiling with this current crop of players is reached with him finding form. Maybe he starts less but I want to see him getting minutes to try and put it together.

You talking about him like I used to with Walcott. Because once in a while his pace will free him when played through and he will do something. It will just prolong the situation and you maybe now he can build on it. We are forgetting he is sucking the life out of a whole wing, and the players around will suffer

Even when he beats players, it leads to nothing. In his last 17 games 0 goals or assists. That’s just not good enough. We not talking about a player having few bad games. We talking abysmal player who is showing the same deficiencies for 18 months

I certainly don't think the way Martinelli is performing is good enough, but there is a reason Arteta is starting him up until now. He offers useful tools that other players like Trossard and even Saka don't have to the same level in his speed off and on the ball. When we don't have that, a team can focus on staying behind the ball and clogging passing lanes. Just the presence of Martinelli keeps teams a little honest and opens them up for other players to take advantage of.

If we are going to be at our best, it'll be with Martinelli picking his form back up to be that guy for us. That's what Arteta has been betting on imo. If he can't, we'll have to hope Sterling can provide some of these tools or the gameplan with Trossard can work better.

Ideally we get a Martinelli 2.0 in at some point to take us up a level.

He’s also obviously doing well in training since Arteta is starting him. He’s the only one who can get behind the defence and in tough games we need his defensive work. But at a certain point it becomes a curse. We can’t keep playing a winger who doesn’t produce

Probably only thing saving him is his defensive work. Terrorist Arteta loves it. Otherwise Sterling would have started in his place already.

If Martinelli had taken some of his chances this season, we’d likely not be having these conversations.

This is a case of a player out of form, as much as it is a player that doesn’t fit what we need anymore.

He always look guy who work hard but as attacker he has to start scoring the yesterday chances were not difficult and he just rushed his shots

He's just no longer the profile Arteta needs. A shame, as I like the player, but it is what it is. I'd be more on the trenches for him like @db10_therza if I felt he had an extra gear or two from the peak the player has shown before.

Brother you’ve got me confused with another db10.

I’ve been out of them trenches for some time now. I was hoping we’d upgrade him the last window…

I think he’s better than made out here though, and I usually prefer him starting over Trossard but yeah, he’s very very upgradeable even in the current market.

The reason I prefer him starting is frankly his last 2 chances - he is the only guy in our team who makes the runs to get those kind of chances. We need to have that profile, so from that point of view (plus his phenomenal work rate) he starts for me but I really hope we buy a class A narcotics level guy for the left wing this summer.

It’s a must.

Jesus last night rusty as anything couldnt even control a pass, let alone think he could score.

Martinelli, also mentally hes struggling not just in front of goal but general play.

If Saka or Havertz are not scoring it's a huge problem with Ødegaard out. I mentioned it last week and looking more likely game by game. I can see a lot of tight games we can nick if our defence can keep up their great work, however making clear chances let alone taking them last night was a clear problem. Unsustainable, long term.

Just saw the goal Yamal scored last night against Monaco, this is the kind of goal Martinelli should be creating for himself for breakfast at this point. He used to be capable of it, I just don't understand what has happened to him, is Arteta's training and instructions to him too constricting?
Like wth is he training at everyday? This is literally the bread and butter of an inverted wing forward, run at pace, cut in, shoot. He simply doesn't do it enough and the few times he makes runs like that the ball is skied.
This has to be the most bizarre regression of a potential WC winger to whatever he is now, that I've ever seen. ZERO goal contributions in 17 games now.

To much defensive work and less risk allowed --> less attacking situations -->
rusty, bad decision making --> lowered confidence --> "fans" abuse him --> overthinking everything -->
no goals/assists in 17 games

We create so little at the moment that every chance turns into a game defining moment.

Hopefully can get a goal to get his confidence up soon.

Potentially could come against Bolton, front 3 of Martinelli Jesus Sterling

Sterling holding with on the right allowing him to be the winger who cuts in more central areas especially can rotate positions with Jesus. Someone does need to provide an overlap for him on the left though can calafiori do that or even MLS at left centre mid with Nwanieri in Ødegaard role and trying rice as the 6.
