Gabriel Martinelli: Got That Dog In Him

Even in here there’s clear bias between Partey and Rice. They keeping quiet cause Partey is showing them up. But the moment he slips up. They will show up
Yes but it's not the one you're thinking about and you know we can't discuss it. That's not the best example. The Pepe/Martinelli one is a better example because it doesn't have that other factor attached.

I noted a while ago that his finishing used to be his standout attribute and has since gone missing, another thing I'm noting with him is that he plays like a left-footed LW despite being right-footed.

He doesn't really invert and take shots or crosses with his right. He drives it to the left and tries to push through from there. But since he's not left-footed, he can't really cross the ball from there that well, he'd have to use the outside of his foot to do so, and he doesn't have that in his locker.

I really don't get why this is the case.
It’s one of the biggest Martinelli mysteries.

He has the technical and physical attributes to be a cut in and shoot merchant but something about his game makes it very easy for defenders to read him. I suspect that something in his body language gives away when he’s going to cut in and shoot.

On top of that defenders show him outside which means when he does cut in and shoot he struggles with separation.

Been telling them this for years bro, years.

Because he purple patched his way to 15 league goals as a 22 year old or something everyone decided he was definitely going to improve year on year and that pointing out the red flags in his game was just hating.

Countless examples of young players starting very bright but being figured out by defenders and/or never pushing on.

We may need you to recreate your famous post about your son asking about Walcott, tbh.

Replace Theo with Gabby, with you looking right at your kid and going...

Yes the same stats that shows if we put in enough crosses it will increase our chances. Whatever Rice gives us defensively he takes back in general play. The stats don’t show that. With him in the middle you can forget about any clever combination play in the middle. Angles don’t open up with him. He’s just a dark hole on the ball

I know you love him. But he ain’t it
What has Partey given us in general play to make up for his porous defensive effort? We’ve barely scored goals the past month.

A certain player who had similar flaws in his game that was also playing in a setup that didn’t make the most of his strengths was routinely insulted and had their intelligence question despite being much more talented.

In here it’s always Arteta or his LB/LCM being blamed.
Pepe didn't work as hard as Martinelli though. It's a different situation.

Because Arteta wants him to play like a touchline winger which doesn't suit him as much as it does Saka. Besides that Saka has at least an overlapping fullback which drags a defender away from him. You can even see in the recent games in which White has been to defensively how ineffective Saka has been.
I still believe in Martinelli but not much will change if Arteta doesn't change. Martinelli is simply not the kind of player that will dribble past 2 defenders at once. There aren't many players that can do this anyway. He's a tenacious hard working inside forward that can cause havoc in central and wide areas but you need players that support him. Put Calafiori and Nwaneri on his side and you will instantly see a different Martinelli. The stats show that neither Merino or Rice have offered much progressive actions this season. Rice has been a lot better last season but that was before Arteta reverted back to this rigid no risk system.

Agree, it’s been stop start for us in our wide areas, particularly in having the overlapping run to create that minimal space for our wingers to get into.

Injuries in part has contributed to this slow down, us not being able to pick up that rhythm. Also we are seeing what is not working and where we need to fix up.

The good news is that our players are mostly close to a return. We could be in a situation where our squad is almost complete post the international break. We’ve also slowly integrated Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly as well, which is a plus.

But… we need to get our groove back, get players outside of Martinelli and Saka, allowing that ability to get into those half spaces again where they can create that panic for opposition teams.

Seeing Saka and Martinelli stuck in those 2v1 situations at a standstill is not good, and it needs to be eradicated fast.

I know this, but Martinelli doesn't even go for it even when the shape of the defense facilitates it. Did Arteta ban him from inverting or something?

It’s starting to get to the point where it’s not just form. He just can’t beat his man ever and he can’t create the space for himself to shoot either. Thats why he plays it safe or crosses. He doesn’t have more in his locker. A proper 1 on 1 attacker would have a field day on our left side. The space is there to attack the man consistently and Gabi never does it effectively.

Glad people are starting to see this. Defenders clocked onto this major weakness in his game last season.

He’s a very good player but this is a major flaw for a winger and will prevent him from being a serious first 11 player in a top team.

Looks like a case of instructions not being suited to his skill set and him trying his best.

Arsenal Quotes

What does Arsenal mean? It means class. The structure of the Club, everything has a classy feel about it. It isn't always about success, there is more than that and this is what makes it a cut above the rest.
