Gabriel Martinelli: Dogged and Determined

Also worth mentioning that he was frozen out for nearly half the season. He's yet to have a true full season of appearances as a professional. Considering he's being managed by a total ***** I think that it's quite impressive how well he's developed from the 4th division of Brazil to the most competitive league in the world in these last 3 years.
Remember how people were convinced the reason he wasn't playing was because Mikel was giving him some kind of secret CF training?

I agree but I think he would really benefit from getting into the box more and playing as a central striker. That's where we could really optimise his potential and have a world class player, for me. Can't see how that will happen with Jesus and Eddie signings, though.
There's nothing to Martinelli that suggests he's a number 9.

Because that's the BS excuse Arteta kept giving, some cryptic allusion to individual training for a new role.

He basically shared the LW role with ESR, 12 goals/assists in the league is very impressive (Emile got 12 too, so both did well)

He still has things to improve upon, all young players do...but If he stays fit, you feel he will make that winger spot his own, and his output will definitely improve.

Don't agree at all. Good close control in short spaces and ball retention with his back to a defender, good short space agility, very good movement and instinct for getting into goal scoring positions / for the goal, and very good work rate pressing. All the ingredients are there. Plus we saw it in a few games under Em*ry, where it was the best he looked, even if the competition was typically a bit lesser in those games.

As always, people, like with Saliba, with their conspiracy theories going too far in the logic when the reality is much more simpler, looking silly in hindsight.

A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to react to a video Gabriel Martinelli posted on his Instagram story, showing the forward scoring a number of goals in a training drill.

It has been a frustrating season for the 19-year-old. He made his return from a long-term injury in December. And like Emile Smith Rowe, he seemed to make an immediate impact after being thrown in by Mikel Arteta.

However, unlike Smith Rowe, Martinelli has struggled for game-time since. The teenager has not played a single Premier League game since January.

However, Martinelli has issued a reminder of what he can do on the training pitch. The Brazilian posted a video on his social media of him scoring several goals in a drill.

The first goal is unquestionably the best as he performs a delicious volley to send the ball into the far corner.

And unsurprisingly, the clips have not escaped the attention of the Arsenal fans. Several have speculated about what the specific drill could mean for Martinelli’s future.

Admittedly, there are plenty who have insisted that it is probably a common drill for players in a number of positions. But some have wondered whether it is a sign that Arteta wants to use Martinelli as a central striker.

As noted by Football London, the Arsenal boss once stated that Martinelli’s best position is through the middle. And some are hoping that these videos are an indicator that he may soon get his chance as a striker.

Here is a tweet that includes the videos, along with some of the reaction from Arsenal fans…

No conspiracy it's actually true. That's why it's hilarious.

Ball retention against Van Dijk/Dias in crowded central areas isn't as easy as trying to keep the ball of one full back in a 1 v 1 where he has an option to pass back or try to beat them. Most full backs just stand and wait rather than commit. So it is easier.

He has pace and acceleration which when we are dominating games will not help him in central areas. There won't be any space to run behind. Whereas out wider there tends to be more space or less bodies.

Maybe over time he bulks up abit and learns the position. But at the moment Martinelli isn't a number 9 and is effective as a wide forward.

He would be even more effective if he had a decent full back and a number 9 making moves/opening spaces and playing combinations.

Would love Raphina here, don’t know where he fits in though.
Think he's class, but he'd not fit in here. He'd be wasted and sidelined for boring players and it would be very frustrating.

Think he's trying to go to Barca last I heard.
