Gabriel Martinelli: The Grift Of The Gab

Dunno how anyone can say at this point he hasn't regressed in an attacking sense. I used to think he had a higher ceiling than Saka but Saka just kept improving and Nelli didn't.

At 21 he looked like he could take on the world, at 24 he looks like his career is already on the decline.

The only reason he still plays is his defensive contribution is and has always been top tier, but its nowhere near enough to justify starting for wannabe PL champions now. Even looks like he lost that instinctive finishing he once had, such a shame.

His career really isn't salvageable with us. He should want to move at this point. I have real doubts that he can be successful anywhere but I'm 100% sure this is the wrong team and manager for him. He needs some fresh instruction somewhere with lower expectations and maybe even a position change. I can't see it improving much for him here.

Nasty stuff 🔥

16 non penalty goals in the PL at like 21, you can’t say he was **** all along.
That season (2022/23) he had Zinchenko and Xhaka behind him, on his side.
And he had G. Jesus close to him, pre-Qatar injury G. Jesus for 4 months.
15G+6A in 36 Prem matches, not bad at all.

Season after that Zinchenko regressed a lot, Xhaka has gone to Leverkusen and Havertz arrived as Xhaka's replacement.
And after-Qatar injury G. Jesus who also regressed.
6G+4A in 35 Prem matches, huge drop-off with respect to season before.
Change of players around him can explain a bit his regression.
And change of football style which became more consetvative.

Last season he was unrecognizable, like the rest of our squad.
And style of football became really ugly.
You can count 3 or 4 really good football matches last season, 2 against Real and City at home.

You cant keep attributing Martinelli's decline to those other players. The most likely scenario is that he's had a purple patch back then, like Ramsey in 13/14, and never found that form again.

Unlike Ramsey, his base form isn't good enough. Lacks decision making, technique, finishing and whatnot. All in all just a terrible player.

he's never had great football iq. His confidence has been gone for awhile to add to that. Really don't understand why arteta hasn't turned him into a striker...make runs with his pace where he's not overthinking things. He can be used similar to gyok in making runs off the channel.

He's not smart enough or have enough tricks to be a winger

He’d probably be desperate enough to accept a new contract on the same or even reduced wages tbh.

He definitely knows that this is the best it will ever get for him. I reckon we sell for whatever we can this summer though unless they prioritise selling Havertz (useful player but his contract is a problem).
The contract negotiations at the end of this season is gonna be real interesting. If for example Saliba doesn’t sign a contract this season then he’s gonna be on his last 12 months, very suspicious to me with Madrid wanting him. Mosquera transfer might be a lot more than back up.

Saka is another one, his contract will be on its last 12 months and him only signing 4 years after making it difficult again is interesting. But i may just be negative.

People only said this because he’s faster than Saka, has never shown anything otherwise for people to say he has a higher ceiling than Saka. Bukayo has always been way better.

Young Martinelli was faster and a better finisher. But it was obvious Saka always had more guile and a more consistent technical base than Martinelli. He did graduate from Hale End academy after all. There is a reason Martinelli kept getting tryouts with United and Barca but never got selected. He was talented, but doesn't have top top qualitee like the professor used to say.

Yeah young Nelli was looking like a potential Vardy/Rich Man’s Theo regen.

Fast, good movement in behind and good finishing. His game has always been pretty basic but we’ve seen some of the most basic players become elite goalscorers.

As much as I don’t want to make excuses for him, this current role we have him playing pretty much highlights all his flaws and minimises his strengths.

I don't know if this is true.

Mail Sport understands that Arsenal were open to selling Gabriel Martinelli at the start of the window, however, they had valued him at more than £60m, while interest was only reaching the £40m mark. This deterred the club from pushing to sell him.

If this is true, they should have sold him and buy better LW.
Who would give £60m for him?
His price will go down.
Transfermarkt values him at 55m euros ( £48m)

If the above is true then someone is overvaluing these players.

I know people will use others as a benchmark and say “Elanga, Madueke etc went for this or that” but you have to realise he’s getting more than them and some won’t be able to afford his wages. 40m would have been great business had we done it considering we signed him for barely anything.

I swear Calafirori was more attacking in the last 3 games than I have seen any of the LWs under Arteta.

We should have sold at £40m, the guy is on 180k p/w ffs - we were never going to get Madueke/Elanga type fees due to the wages.

Nah Martinelli used to bring an interesting chaos factor in addition to his hard work and pace, Saka has always been excellent at the basics but has added weapons to his game over time as well.

Martinelli has just become a hard-working winger who rarely beats his man and lost that chaos that made him unpredictable and a top prospect.

Major misstep to not sell him. His football IQ is getting worse if anything. He just isn't developing and he's too old for it to likely change

Martinelli has become a defender's dream. Even Szoboszlai managed to shut him down ffs.
If you're a RB and need a confidence boost, Martinelli is your man.

I acknowledge that his defensive contribution makes him somewhat valuable as LW in certain games. He had some good recovery runs against Liverpool as well. But if we actually want to utilise his strengths in attack, he needs to play centrally.

He's always been the same head down run into nowhere type of player, Saka was always more intelligent and technically gifted. Martinelli was just faster and more explosive but that's not working for us now anymore.
