Gareth Southgate's England

What’s the issue with this if the player consistently performs for your team, and there isn’t really any viable alternative (depending on what you think of guys like Tomori ect

Two massive issues with the decision to send Maguire on v Scotland are this...

1) as meaningless friendlies go it is the least meaningless going! It is however still a friendly and one goal is to give players a try out to see how they perform for the national squad. This was the perfect chance to put fikori on, let the public see him, prove he is in your plans and ensure the flights from Italy were worth it. He will not be buying in to the England experience right now.

2) more importantly most nations are not aware of the extent of the Maguire debate. Scotland very much are. Scottish fans are also known to excel at being wind up merchants. It should have been obvious to southgate that this was not the game to have either Henderson or Maguire on the field for. As it is there was no duty of care and thought generally when bringing him on. His arrival on the pitch meant more focus on Maguire and more on the sense of Southgate.

I can see why Southgate picks Maguire, he has performed even when his club level has been lacking. Sticking with someone you trust should be commended, throwing him under the bus however is simply idiotic.

He started with Guehi and Dunk mate, that’s as experimental as you’re going to get.

I agree with your point about bringing him on, it doesn’t help anyone. And Maguire himself should have left United for his own good. West Ham would have been a great move.

People want him out of the squad completely though; and I haven’t yet seen a reasonable counter argument yet to the fact that he’s there because he’s been a good performer for England at 3 tournaments now. Why would Southgate drop him if he’s never let him down?

Sky showed where Foden has played for city in his career. 4% of the time he played as CAM. 50% as Left winger then other positions. But 4% his whole city career shows maybe Southgate is right

Think best ever is pushing it. Don’t even think it’s the best in my lifetime. Even just comparing it to the so called “golden generation” how many would you take from this team over that one?

Goalkeeper: Meh not much to choose between them
Defence: Don’t think I’d pick any ahead of Ferdinand, Terry and Cole. Reece James or Trent would probably make it.
Midfield: Rice maybe? Again though Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard takes some beating. Think we have better wingers now.
Forwards: Rooney and Kane. Probably edge it to Rooney but close. The other forwards again are pretty underwhelming. (Personally felt Crouch was very effective for England)

Yet that team never made it past a QF. Bizarre how turgid we could look at times.

Part of it was balance in midfield in that generation. As you say, Gerrard played DM which he never was for Liverpool. And Bellingham is already something special. Cole above and be you d anything we have at lb but I’d take all the RBs over Neville. Think Stones runs the CBs close. Wingers are above and beyond and Kane has scored more goals than Rooney. And depth counts for something in the current squad

Which basically he means he's fit for Sunday, I think we've been trying to keep City guessing but this has spoiled it now.

The midfield still leaves a lot to be desired. I think England should have well moved on from Henderson at this point, Rice doesn't need his hand held, Gallagher offers similar anyways but with more youth, JWP well worth a call up surely.

Southgate is truly an awful manager. It's so frustrating to me that he's allowed to put the handbrake on a squad this talented. The favoritism he shows to dreck like Henderson and Maguire is sickening. I agree completely, Rice is more than capable of holding that role down by himself. We could play a more dynamic midfielder next to him and Bellingham. JWP is certainly in good enough form to get a call up on merit but look how long it took for Tomori to get one. Honestly the only real surprise here is that he hasn't tried to sneak his special boy Mason Mount in there.
