Dowman comfortably the best player on display - just better touch and quicker mind. And he's probably the youngest too
Was getting annoyed they weren't passing to him quick enough. A lot of wasted transitions. Could have had more of the ball tbh.

This is a great England squad but they're all very dribble heavy, including Dowman even though he's a great passer aswell and is arguably the best dribbler (bar maybe Ngumoha and I even think Dowman is better).

This kid man...

Bear in mind how good De Cat is himself. A top talent in his own right, dominated by Dowman on that play.

England lose 4-2 to Italy, by many accounts a tactical disaster. They’re now in danger of not making it past the group stage.

Dowman looking dangerous at times but this is clearly a step up from what he’s used to. Just needs to learn when to release the ball because he’s got the passing ability.

Problem is they've got too many main characters in that team and not enough supporting guys. Dowman himself is the main character of main characters and in this system he isn't really fed or platformed the way he is at Arsenal - where he has Casey's OOP work, Ibrahim's line-breaking and water-carrying and the running power of Zecevic-John, Harriman-Annous and Bailey-Joseph ahead of him. It's not lost on me that all the goals England scored had little to do with Dowman in the build-up. For the wonderful performances he has put in, it felt like an amazing cameo from one movie lifted and placed into a different, incongruent movie. As if it were inconsequential to the game at hand.

It's still pretty incredible that he's able to standout the way he does at 15, even on one of his less good days. Bodes well.

I'm also intrigued to see who Arteta is thinking of regarding his "beautiful" surprise. I have ideas on who I'd like to see given an opportunity to impress. I think Andre Harriman-Annous in particular has earned a shot in one of the attacking positions and Michal Rosiak is a great technician who's been on the fringes for a while but I don't think they'll be the surprise, although I think they'll get called up for sure. I have a feeling that the surprise will be one of Ife Ibrahim and Marli Salmon. The latter has catapulted himself to the U21s despite being 15 himself and has still managed to go largely under the radar. I can see Arteta taking a liking to him due to his poise on and off the ball despite being so young at CB/RB.

Ife Ibrahim however is one of the more underrated talents we have. Big frame, good passing range, great at breaking up play and launching attacks - but one thing that makes me think Arteta will like him is the incredible level of patience he displays in possession, often preferring to be a tempo-setting controller rather than the swashbuckling player that his skillset would suggest. I think he has bigger potential than people realise and if he's able to build up consistency then he is one to watch.

I would also not rule out Louis Zecevic-John and Dan Casey.

Dowman clearly not used to the tightness of attention (and cynicism and physicality) of the Italians 2 years his senior, but the England team is a mess. As you say, lots of players used to being the THE GUY in their normal teams, but also tactically its a **** show. Front 3 far too often isolated and feeding off scraps, midfield looks lost too.

One of the best threads on the forum, great updates and some top insights @MutableEarth especially :applause:.

Amazing how decades ago scouting was word of mouth and certainly unable to be so in depth pre internet and social media. Lot of eye test.

Well I remember as a youngster getting train back from Nottingham Forest we had been beat 1-0 four of us teens used to go home and lot away games. Couple older lads on our train carriage one said he worked as a scout said we had a great crop kids coming through. Likes Rocastle, Thomas had already played and known, he said a young kid called Paul Merson coming through will be one to watch wasn't wrong.

Well I saw a kid play over Regents Park London, he would been about 14 at time built like a MW boxer, unreal skill, touch and power, unplayable, I was bit younger my cousin playing against him he was also being scouted signed but did knee so didn't happen for him.

He was playing against a kid for a club called Stowe, Paddington based. He did ok John Barnes.

Expected outcome. Gower I think could have had a shot but given we have a superior version of him in Dan Casey already right behind him I think a move is the best thing for him. I see him being a pretty good player though, same with Henry-Francis. Butler-Oyedeji is a good technical player, just needs end product and he hasn't been able to do it yet so we'll see.

I expect their spots to be taken by the likes of Kamara/Ferdinand, Dudziak and Casey but there'll also be space for a Louis Zecevic-John to come up IMO and I would like to see Ife Ibrahim get U21 minutes aswell.

The goal and assist Max Dowman just got btw... The kids and absolute joke, must be fast tracked to the first team next season. Already 6ft at 15 and physically would handle it.
