If I'm honest, I didn't expect anything good from Ljungberg. :D
He did mature as a person but I still remember him from his crazy football days.
Freddie always came across as pretty studious and hardworking - was also a pretty clever player to his credit. That said, I didn't think he'd be a coach either but he's really taken to it. The u23s have played some excellent football for the last few months and he's done excellent work to improve the players individually and collectively. Saka is a great example- already a great dribbler and final 3rd player, Ljungberg had done exceptional work in improving his off the ball movement, something Ljungberg himself was a specialist in.

Freddie will probably have a shoot on assistant manager if Vieira is in the cards when Emery leaves.
Definitely - his offensive coaching shines through the U23s - finishing is better, off the ball movement is better, possession patterns are better, counter attacks are better - as good as Gatting's team was before he eventually was ousted, this team - despite the mid-season hiccup - is playing better football than before. Gatting and Laraman had top talent at their disposal - a midfield duo of DaSilva and Willock, Nelson, Nketiah and Smith-Rowe aswell.

I could see him adding a lot to the first team coaching staff. Manager one day? Couldn't say. But he's done very stellar work IMO and if he stays in that position next season, the newer pros will be of great interest. John-Jules could go on loan and Balogun could be the line leader. Saka will probably stay too. Could be an interesting looking U23 team next season - Smith, Olayinka and Burton the midfielders most likely.

So since the burnley game is irrelevant now, who do we think will get a chance?

I'm hoping Nketiah and Willock gets a start at least.. Would be fun to see Amaechi or Saka get a cameo too.

We will see Iwobi and Mhkitaryan again and Kolasinac and Guendouzi will replace them after 72 mins. Xhaka and Torreira will complete 90 mins. Saka and Amaechi won't be on the bench. Nketiah will be lucky to get 5 mins.

In all seriousness, I hope we get to see them. Will be far more compelling than anything I'm seeing from us right now.

I know you are joking, but I do fear you are right

Nketiah not coming on today was disappointing, but I honestly didn't expect him to come on either.

There is 17 days between Burnley and the final I read somewhere.

If we get to the final noone from the u23 is going to get look in, not even on the bench. Nketiah will be there but doubt he will play.

Me neither - it would have made sense not to bring on Guendouzi IMO and put Iwobi one side and Nketiah the other.

It's just very annoying. I know what to expect as soon as the line-up is announced. Nothing different. Imagine how different the dynamic is if we start a Saka, Amaechi or an Nketiah wide, or Willock as part of a 3 man midfield. We bring them in and we have options to change the dynamic. As of now, we are one paced and the least technical Arsenal side in some time.

It's so frustrating. I'd happily back Emery for a long time as I've seen many positives over the course of this year and the spirit in the team he managed to create for most most of the season, but only if he does it with the young guns.

Anybody think there may be an opprtunity for Kelechi Nwakali or Krystian Bielik next season. Both these players really intrigue me especially Bielik who definitely has the physicality and technique required. Nwakali should have stayed in Holland instead of his loan spell at Porto B. We badly need more technicians in midfield (strange that Arsenal are in this situation) and I think we should start looking within with Willock/Bielik and Nwakali.

I agree just the buzz of Emery trying something different could have perhaps galvanized the fans and players, willock getting a start next to torreira, saka or Ameachi on the bench, the manager is so fearful of his job he doesn't want to take any risks he just keeps going with the usual suspects and expecting different results.

Either one of those guys would be ripe for an opportunity - I don't think it will be Nwakali though. His time at Arsenal has been marred by the fact that the Home Office just won't give us any breaks when it comes to non-EU talent and work permits. He clearly wants to come back but it will be hard for him. Which is a shame as his profile is sorely missed in our midfield. The energy and technique is needed. Willock is the closest profile left. He's not terribly quick but he's got decent power, good close-control dribbling, good balance and agility for his size (at nearly 6'2) and the competitive nature in the middle that we need IMO.

As for Bielik - I think if we want a back-up DM for Torreira, he's someone who should be considered. Lack of mobility however could be an issue, but he's got stamina and is a good technician who can defend. Can still add an extra dimension, doesn't necessarily need to be quick - but other players in the midfield might need some extra athleticism.

Yeah, I just wanted to see something new. I would have gotten behind him a lot more, I'd have been more understanding if we failed.

Tomorrow is the final U18 fixture:

The north vs south playoff final - Derby vs Arsenal. It's the decider for the overall league. If we win, we're not just the PL south champs, we're the U18 PL champs of the entire country. We will be missing Sam Greenwood and Miguel Azeez who are playing for England U17s in the U17 Euros (Greenwood has scored 2 penalties while Azeez has an assist and has impressed greatly despite England not winning a game so far against France & Holland).

I think the game will be streamed on Derby's website hopefully. Additionally, we could see Saka and Amaechi appear for Arsenal in some capacity. Daley-Campbell could be playing his last game and Cottrell is also possibly injured. The lineup could be this:

Okonkwo
Daley-Campbell Clarke McGuinness Swanson
Smith Olayinka
Amaechi Coyle Saka
Balogun

FFS we still can mathematically get 4th. Even it is beyond long shot. Not a single one of the u23 will see a bench time I think.
We need up to 11 goals potentially. I think we can call it a write off . But you're right, we won't see any U23s IMO - I hope beyond hope that I'm proven wrong.

Here's a link to the stream for tomorrow. I'll be coming back from work but should make it in time. Will be intriguing and a hard game for our youngsters but we have a dangerous attack and a captain who can unlock defenses in Matt Smith.

I just think I know Emery personality. I think more managers would do it too, play the strongest team. Being childishly naive and hopeful! We will see!

Cheers for the stream!
