⚽️ A-M World Cup Fantasy League

Dear ,

The A-M Fantasy League for the World Cup 2026 is now open

Find more details inside the thread

Great players who became overrated after retirement

Riou

The Invincibles, warra team

Country: Northern Ireland
All the players listed were pre-2020 and the thread is about retired players you absolute unfathomably dented potato brained moron.

As an Irishman, calling me a potato in any way is racist bro.

Reporting you, and expect my good fellow Irish friend Rice to co sign on your permanent ban 👍

Lol what
Does he even qualify as a great player for the thread

Saw him make it into an all time Prem Arsenal and Sp**s combined 11 over Dennis Bergkamp, so even though he isn't that great he needs to be in here (and every overrated thread on every forum forever) for blasphemy like that!

John Terry.

Rio Ferdinand was such a better player but somehow they’re perceived as equals? Sol comfortably better as well.

Helped by playing in a hell of a deep line with Mourinho. Good player but I’m not having him in the same bracket as the great modern CBs like Cannavaro, Ramos or Van Dijk.
Sol is the exact opposite of this thread. Great player that is severely underrated, especially now.

Have been fortunate enough to watch both of Adams & Campbell at Highbury and whilst I will always love Tony, Campbell was the better player. Would genuinely put him slightly ahead of Rio too.

Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs. Although many may disagree with me about Scholes, namely TH14. But United fans overhype them comparing Scholes to Xavi and Pirlo and Giggs to Nedved. They rate them over Beckham and I think that's because Becks left and the other 2 stayed but Becks was the only player who finished high in the Balon Dor and had most assists in the PL on 3 separate seasons

Also while Scholes could control and dictate matches with incredibly accurate long passing he wasn't creatively great like Xavi and Fabregas. Also Scholes never won United player of the year

Giggs was consistently good but high highest G+A was about 20, which is good but compare to Pires who managed 24 in 28 games in 01/02

I agree. Campbell in his prime was a beast. Physically a monster and one of the quickest defenders in the league, if not the quickest.

Is there a more underrated/forgotten defender in recent times? Behemoth of a CB.

I hear Clint Hill mentioned more regularly than Sol ffs.

Kolo Touré, literally never brought up in any conversation ever despite being a part of the Invincibles and played his entire PL career at top clubs.

The man played like 350+ PL games, won the league going undefeated, won 2 FA Cups and was at the heart of the defense that got to the CL final.

I know this doesn’t really go with our forum but I feel like this is an interesting topic. The title is self explanatory & players from any sport qualify.

For me the most obvious example is Tim Duncan. An all time great in his own right but gets put in conversations now days that he shouldn’t be in. Many people put him in top 10 & top 5 list which is kind of outrageous thinking back to when he played. If Kevin Garnett for example was drafted to the Sp**s instead of the horrendous Timberwolves he would probably end up similar accolades. It was the Sp**s system that was the key & his supporting cast from time to time outshined him. He is often regarded as the greatest power forward of all time when for most of his career he played as a Center. He is a rare case of a player being underrated during his playing time & then becoming vastly overrated after retirement because people just started looking at his accolades.

Looking forward to read about other players like this from different sports.
You started off with a terrible take, my God. Did you actually watch Tim Duncan for his whole career? Yeah he was boring to watch but lead his team to 50 wins basically every single season for almost 20 years. Elite on both ends of the court for nearly his whole career.

As far as the Sp**s' system, what's very funny about this comment is that it evolved 2 or 3 times in Timmy's career and his effectiveness never changed. The notion that he was just a system player, is quite frankly only something you could come up with if you don't understand basketball at all. It's a testament to Tim Duncan that his efficacy didn't change despite the team around him and the style of play evolving and him being the constant.

I will never forget the cleanest tackle ive seen came from Kolo I think in a CL game against Bayern, he had a winger bearing down on him, he feinted his body left to get the winger to go outside and then threw out his right leg to sweep the ball away at the perfect moement. Those days I thought Senderos-Toure was the start of the most elite CB partnership but Philippe had too many brainfarts and exposed for lack of pace.

No idea if this controversial or not but Vincent Kompany for me. Good player but imo gets brought up in too many best prem defenders of all time conversations. VVD has been a royal pain in the arse at Liverpool and should be in those conversations, Kompany was a good defender and a good leader but is nowhere near that level IMO

Scholes (the entire English golden generation tbh).

Gets compared to the likes of Xavi, Pirlo, Kroos ect despite never doing anything at international level, and his European accomplishments are no where near those guys.

I think he's up there. Great with the ball, pivotal for Man City during his time there and captained Belgium to their best results in recent memory. Not VVD level for me but I think there's a genuine case to be made for VVD being top 3 in PL history.

It's weird how much praise Scholes gets while Carrick is almost forgotten.

Carrick was better than both Giggs and Scholes IMO.

I literally said he's an all time great in his own right & was underrated during his playing time. He shouldn’t be in any top 5 or top 10 lists like some people pretend like he belongs to. The guy struggled to beat the Nets in an NBA finals, got outscored by Ginobilli/Parker in basically every one of their wins against the pistons, got outplayed by Tony Parker against Lebron & the make a wish kids in a final they shouldn’t have even been in as the Suns were the best team but got screwed with players getting suspended over nothing & he was an obvious role player for the last ring(I don't really count it against him as he was old). Only in 1999 he was truly dominant for the title. He was a great piece in a an incredibly well oiled machine & Garnett was screwed by having to toil in a crap franchise. His all time great status is unquestioned but let's not change history here.

His injuries vastly enhanced his greatness

The idea of Scholes being the elite controller coincided with the great Barca team, and a few Pep quotes (who’s known to exaggerate the competency off his opponents). I think that’s what really elevated his reputation, along with the United PR in the media.

Don’t get me wrong, top player but he’s not at the level people put him at.

Carrick was really underrated yeah, should have been an England regular. They are really missing a player like him now.

Wanted to say this myself when thinking of football but it’s a thread about individual players so didn’t bother

As defenders it's close, you could argue Sol over him, but Rio was clearly better on the ball.

I do think out of all of them though, Scholes has the most overrated.

Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, Terry ect all at least were great Champions League players.

Other than the goal against Barca I personally can’t remember Scholes being that impactful for United in those games.

In fact I remember Fergie always playing a load of workhorses in midfield in those games.

No doubt. Also Rios career longevity counts for something.

If you could take either at their absolute peak for a crucial game though? Sol, every time.
