I've seen him play a lot under Bielsa, both in Championship and PL. He's not as crap as people make him out to be. I'd say he has a decent chance of proving himself even as a no. 2 here. If he fails, we lose nothing (maybe even make a profit). Sensible bet by the club.

I'm really intrigued about Meslier. They say GK's don't mature until early 30's and he's still quite young for a GK. He's a good shot stopper, and has been capped at most youth age groups for the French national team. Can we unlock something here with decent coaching?

Meslier did look a talent when I first saw him. They're probably hoping that our coaching improves him and a year from now we'll be calling him the best ball playing 2nd choice keeper in the league and praising them for getting him for free.

More likely he improves and decides to play everyweek, so we sell him for 6m quid and buy another GK for Inaki...

I get wages and being content as a backup are factors which I mentioned in the post below it but since you asked, I had a look on Capology both Sommer and Ortega were on less than Kepa was last season so I'm not sure the wages argument really holds up. There were other names on there too who could have been decent back ups.

I do find it funny how a few on here always do this thing and act like every alternative is impossible the moment someone questions the club’s decision when in reality none of us actually know that. No real reason to do this but the exact same thing happened with Kepa last summer, I got told 5m was great business then he went on to cost us in both domestic cups and looked nervous along the way.

IMO it’s completely fine to admit the club gets things wrong sometimes instead of attempting to justify every decision.

I read a lot about this guy . He had 1 good season in PL under Marcelo Bielsa and his Initial loan season was also good.
Then had some freak matches. Has been highly rated by three coaches. Had bad defense in front of him most of the seasons.
Many Leeds United fans say he can do a good job under a different team .
No one expected him to be at Arsenal. This guy has low confidence.
Hopefully with good coaching , good defensive structure and new team he can do adequate job.

he never cut out his errors was extremely talented few years ago but when your keeper and can't stop making mistakes nobody will be interested so he accept his fate to be 3rd choice and will just earn money to do nothing other than training and play like 5 games in like 3 years.
