Sergio Busquets: the unique talent who changed Barcelona and the game

On the subject of the game evolving this write up of Busquets career by Sid Lowe is well worth reading.

From the article

He wasn’t a great athlete, or didn’t look like one. He didn’t cover countless kilometres and he didn’t move fast. The ball did, though, when it was supposed to. And when it was supposed to slow, it did that too. So did his mind. Busquets just knew. He saw.

You can't judge any sports era by the freak talents they produce anyway. They are by definition anomalies and would have thrived in any era.
Sebastion Coe, Steve Ovett and Steve Cram were running the 800 meters in 1.41, 1.42 time back in 70s/80s. You don’t get many races faster than that today. 2020 Korir won the Olympics in 1.45 Minutes.

Training techniques are improving but there’s a limit to human body advancement. Since the 80s it’s been miniscule. Some of you guys on here are talking about football 15/20 years ago like it was part time guys in the 1800s running around with long johns and leather boots.

Hopefully one day you will be able to understand advanced logical reasoning, till then your hieroglyphic form of communication will do i suppose.

League is very weak
12-15 years ago you had the likes of Middlesbrough and Fulham reaching UEFA Cup Finals. Hasn’t since happened outside the major clubs, despite the clubs outside the top 4 apparently getting stronger and Europe and its competitions getting weaker for various reasons.

Think Fulham beat Roma and Juventus on the way, barely lost to Atletico. Boro also beating the likes of Stuttgart, Roma and Basel on the way, lost to Sevilla.

I ****ing love Beterbiev. Guy should've been allowed to give the Mexican Prince Harry a pasting 😤

Also if Hearns fought Floyd in 2003 he’d have still won imo
Yeah Beterbiev been my boy, fan since he battered Tavoris Cloud from pillar to post. He's literally built different, when you check his underarms and wrists you see he basically trained himself for maximum destruction. That Gvozdyk KO is a top 5 win of the last ten years minimum.

Hearns in 2003 fought at cruiserweight no? yeah either way one of the very few fights where Mayweather would be prohibitive underdog would be vs Hearns no matter what division. 147 maybe an outside shot because of Hearns weaker chin there but he'd most likely take Floyd's head off anywhere.

Don't you think comparing 80's athletics results to now is problematic given the rampant doping that went on?

There are a few reasons for that. The increasing financial risk of falling out of the EPL, the increasing dominance of the top 8 who dismiss anything that's not the CL and the financial disparity between the PL and the rest of Europe that allows European teams to focus on Europe without the same financial risks.

When the top English teams have taken the EL seriously they've done well. And in the last two years English teams have reached the semis of the EL and ECL. West Ham were unlucky with injuries last season and Leicester came up against Mourinho in a European semi.

A current actual PL player says Ligue 1 is tougher than the PL currently.....

And a PL manager says the PL is the toughest he’s seen in his 22 years of being in England. So which do we believe?

There are so many dynamics to consider here when making this call. It’s not just as simple as Bernado says.

Which manager said this? Honestly it's probably just a motivation tactic for his players. "Hey lads, the league is really tough, you all are absolutely amazing for picking up so many points"/ "The league is so hard, harder than it was when it was filled with legends like Henry, Beckham, Ferdinand, Van Der Sar whoever, that we need to work 10x as hard as they did"

It cant just be motivation for players, there has to be merit to such converations.

And Cruyff, Ancelotti, Gatusso, Davids, Maldini will say the same thing. That they were the legends and the players that came after them were the softies. That discussion will continue on forever more.
