Is The Premier League Tougher Than It Used To Be?

Is It?

Yeah, the best teams have always been strong but the non-European teams have never been this good. Hardly a controversial take.
People seem to forget what the bottom half of the league looked like 10-15 years ago. Remember Stoke City?

The teams who are usually not in Europe between the big six and relegation candidates, so the likes of Brighton/West Ham/Aston Villa/Brentford etc
Really reaching there, weren’t West Ham fighting relegation 3 months ago.

So Fulham getting to a Europa final is used as proof that the league was better in 2010, but West Ham winning a European trophy can’t?

We’ll never agree so let’s just leave it. 🤝

Because Fulham won the UEFA cup? Which is Europe’s 2nd competition? What you on about.

Bayern and Leverkusen remains by far the best match of the weekend, such high quality, such entertainment and excitement. I might have to start watching more Bundesliga because the prem is so so dead these days.

Where is the issue according to you, have the top teams becomes worse or is it the other teams?

I dunno, I think it's more general. Because City are undoubtedly the best team in Europe both quality and just generally as a team but after that I don't think the rest of the supposed top sides are all that. Some mid-table sides are better tactically than mid-table sides of the past, but it's not enough for me to say this is peak barclays. I think stylistically as well it's not as enjoyable with how a lot of teams just approach games.

He's a nutter but he's not wrong.

Barely any player in the EPL makes me go "wow" nowadays. He's spot on about our team as well, Teta created a robotic machine where almost all matches look the same.

Ironically, what Jesus does when he's in form is closest to reminiscent of the old days.

He's 100% right, but I am on the same side of the battle as the Chicken Toucher now...

I see the comments saying he’s needs a world class barber as they also don’t make those like they used to

Even when he’s making a valid point he can’t resist a dig at Arsenal when their biggest WC legend left in disgrace.

I think his point would have slapped more with a better trim anyways.

My theory: premier league teams no matter where they are in the table are more defensively solid now than before which makes it hard for individual players to show “flair” which is the numero uno criteria on which casual viewers judge talent.

The only players with that X factor around them these days in the Prem, is De Bruyne and Salah...Haaland I guess too, but his wow factor is more "how is this shaved silverback gorilla able to score so many goals...amazing!", imo.

You could argue Van Disney and Saliba too, but I will be in my cold grave long before I say a centre f3cking back is one of the main reasons to watch football ffs!

And out of interest what is your theory based on?

The amount of ball playing defenders there are now including the strict handball/tackling rules encouraging standing off - I would argue the defensive nous is now gone.

There are less heinous fouls and bone crunching tackles, so players have the platform to be expressing themselves more but often don’t due to the will of whoever their coach is.
